HOMER, Alaska (AP) – A 23-year-old Anchor Point woman suspected of texting while driving was arrested and briefly jailed.
Alaska State Troopers say Ruth Rodriquez was taken into custody last week and released on $500 bail from the Homer Jail.
Troopers took a call that a driver had swerved across the centerline at Mile 162 Sterling Highway.
An officer stopped Rodriquez and determined she had been texting. She was charged with driving with a screen device operating.
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says the offense is a misdemeanor, in contrast to an infraction such as a speeding ticket.
Peters says says arresting officers have the discretion to issue a summons with a mandatory court appearance or to make an arrest.
