Two Kodiak residents were arrested Friday after reports of suspicious behavior led to the discovery of items stolen from a Boy Scout camp and two schools.

Desiree Heglin and Richard Knagin, both 25, were found in possession of stolen items after Alaska State Troopers responded to reports of the pair building a campfire at the end of Beaver Lake Drive and yelling at each other just before 8 a.m., according to an online dispatch.

“While in contact with Heglin and Knagin, several stolen items connected with burglaries in the Kodiak area were observed,” troopers explained, leading them to investigate the pair further.

Troopers recovered items stolen from burglaries at Camp Mueller on May 19, St. Paul Preschool on May 17 and East Elementary School on May 18. Troopers also said they found an unidentified controlled substance in Knagin’s possession.

Knagin and Heglin both face multiple charges related to the thefts, including three counts of second-degree burglary, six counts of second-degree theft and a single count of fourth-degree theft. Knagin was also charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance and violating conditions of his release from jail.

“AST and KPD would like to thank the diligent citizens of Kodiak for quickly reporting suspicious activity which lead to these arrests,” troopers said in the dispatch.
