Alaska State Troopers say a Village Public Safety Officer single handedly stopped an ax attack in Hydaburg and took the suspect into custody early Monday morning.

The VPSO responded to a home around 6:30 a.m. after receiving a report that an intoxicated 51-year-old Richard Carle had used an ax to break down the front door and was threatening to kill the residents, according to an online trooper dispatch. Carle and the family who lived in the home had been arguing when he was forced outside and the family locked the door, which he then destroyed with the ax.

Carle “forcefully resisted” arrest, according to troopers, leading the VPSO to use pepper spray on him. The VPSO was able to get Carle into his vehicle and fasten his seatbelt, at which point Carle allegedly spit at him and “broke a part of the vehicle’s partition,” troopers wrote.

The VPSO transported Carle to the Craig Jail Facility, where Carle is being held without bail. He faces two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of criminal mischief and a single count of first-degree harassment.

Hydaburg is located on Prince of Wales Island, west of Ketchikan.
