The Anchorage Police Department has taken one man into custody and is continuing to search for two other suspects after two shooting incidents in Mountain View.
The first shooting was reported at 1:34 p.m., according to a statement from police.
“A motorcyclist, later identified as 24-year-old David Patterson, was shot at by a male on the corner of McCarrey [Street] and Chena [Avenue],” police spokeswoman Renee Oistad wrote in the statement.
She said an officer saw Patterson a few moments later at a Holiday gas station in Mountain View. When the officer tried to pull him over, Patterson took off. The officer stopped chasing him “when it was deemed too dangerous to continue due to all of the people in the area,” according to Oistad.
However, a short time later, Oistad said “Patterson drove out of an alley and straight into the side of a patrol car” near the intersection of Klevin Street and Peterkin Avenue. Patterson ran from the scene but was captured in a nearby backyard. Oistad said the officer in the patrol car was uninjured, but Patterson suffered non-life-threatening wounds from running into the patrol car, injuries which were treated at a hospital.
“He will be jailed on unrelated outstanding warrants and for a new charge of eluding,” Oistad wrote. “More charges could be filed depending on the outcome of the investigation.”
In an email to KTVA, Oistad clarified, saying, “We know that Patterson is a victim. Whether or not he is also a shooting suspect remains under investigation.”
While police were engaged with Patterson, emergency dispatchers received another report of a motorcyclist involved in a shooting on the 200 block of McCarrey Street, near Chena Avenue. A witness told dispatchers the motorcyclist was firing a gun into the air.
“When officers arrived on scene, they found the motorcycle laying abandoned in the middle of the road and the suspect was gone,” Oistad said. “Both shooting incidents are believed to be related.”
The suspect who allegedly fired at Patterson and the second motorcyclist are both still at large, Oistad said. She said police are not releasing any information on either suspect. She noted two weapons have been recovered.
Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to contact police at 907-786-8900. An anonymous tip can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 907-561-7867.
