Alaska State Troopers arrested a former Wales teacher’s aide for allegedly sexually abusing at least seven young girls.
Nome troopers arrested 43-year-old Amos Oxereok in Koyuk on Wednesday. The arrest came after a weeks-long investigation into allegations that the man had touched the girls inappropriately while at the Wales School and his home. The first report was sent to troopers on Aug. 22, and other young girls came forward shortly after that, according to an online trooper dispatch.
Oxereok worked for the school from 2010 until he moved to Koyuk in 2015, an affidavit from troopers said. All but one of the victims told investigators the man touched them while at the Wales School, sometimes in front of other students.
When asked if troopers believed Oxereok had additional victims at those other schools, AST spokeswoman Megan Peters said, “We will just have to see if anyone additional comes forward. Of course, if anyone has any information regarding the case or potential additional victims, they are asked to contact law enforcement.”
When Oxereok moved to Koyuk, he got a job as an itinerant technology specialist, “where he would travel to different schools and work on computers,” troopers said in the affidavit.
Tuesday, Oxereok’s wife filed a report with the Office of Children’s Services after he allegedly admitted to her that he had touched an 11-year-old girl, troopers stated in charging documents.
Troopers have charged Oxereok with four counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and three counts of second-degree harassment. He is being held at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center in Nome.
Online court records show he was arraigned Thursday and will have his bail set on Friday.
Wales is a community of roughly 140 people located about 100 miles north of Nome.
