Anchorage police say the community came together to help officers arrest a teen who threatened a store clerk at Fred Meyer and then stole multiple firearms.

In a Friday afternoon release, the Anchorage Police Department stated just after 9:46 a.m. Friday they received multiple calls about someone threatening a Fred Meyer gun counter employee at the Midtown store. The person was demanding guns, police wrote. Multiple officers responded.

APD said further investigation showed a 17-year-old young man had entered the store, then rode on a scooter to the sporting goods section. The teen brandished a knife and a hammer, according to police, and threatened the employee at the gun counter until the clerk gave him firearms.

The statement from APD states that once the young man got the guns, he put them in a backpack and left the store on foot, heading east.

Police say it was then that two store employees followed him, reporting information to police. At 9:53 a.m. Friday, an officer spotted the teen and took him into custody near Northern Lights Boulevard. APD officers were able to locate the suspect’s backpack and recover the stolen firearms, the release stated.

Because the young man is a minor, police can’t release his identity. The teen was taken to the McLaughlin Youth Center, where he is being held on charges of robbery and six counts of second-degree theft.

APD thanked store employees and citizens in their statement, saying they “acted swiftly in this situation and served as great witnesses.”
