ANCHORAGE – A mother and her daughter have been indicted for bilking thousands of dollars in PFD money from the state.
Carolyn Owens, 62, of Anchorage allegedly filled out and submitted PFD applications for her adult daughters while they were living Outside for more than 10 years, according to a statement from prosecutors.
In all, Carolyn Owens and her daughter Akilah Owens received more than $50,000.
Carolyn Owns submitted the applications for Akilah and J.R., her adult daughters, without letting on that Akilah lived in Texas from 1997 to 2008, the statement said. J.R. also moved to Texas in 1986 and hasn’t moved back to Alaska. J.R. didn’t know her mother was collecting the money, prosecutors said.
The State of Alaska alleges Akilah Owens received $20,170.28 from applications submitted in her name from 1997 to 2009 and Carolyn Owens accrued $33,321.97 from applications submitted in J.R.’s name from 1986 to 2013, prosecutors said.
Carolyn and Akilah Owens have been indicted on first-degree unsworn falsification, second-degree theft and scheme to defraud charges — all felonies. Both women face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, according to prosecutors.
