An Anchorage man has been charged with murder for the shooting Tuesday that left another man dead.
A complaint filed in district court states that police were called to an auto dealer and auto shop business on East 74th Avenue just after 3 p.m. Tuesday where they were told a male had been shot and killed.
According to a Wednesday morning release from the Anchorage Police Department, witnesses said 26-year-old Trevon Allridge came into the shop and shot 51-year-old mechanic William Schmaus.
Schmaus was pronounced dead on the scene.
A witness told police that they were in the business when they heard a gunshot, according to the document, and saw Allridge putting a handgun in his waistband.
“He saw ‘Will’ fall to the ground. The gun appeared to look like a Glock,” the complaint states.
The witness was then told by Allridge that “he better help out,” which court documents say referred to an escape plan, or he “would be next.”
Allridge attempted to leave in a vehicle owned by one of the witnesses, but eventually left on foot, leaving the gun behind in the vehicle, updated charging documents explained. They further noted the gun had been reported stolen by someone who told police he’d given Allridge a ride two weeks earlier, and that the gun had been kept in the vehicle.
Police stated that officers located Allridge nearly two blocks north of the shop several minutes after the shooting. Allridge was arrested and declined to make a statement during questioning, according to the release.
APD says Allridge is an acquaintance of the shop’s owner and that he had visited numerous times. However, the motive is still unknown.
Allridge is charged with first- and second-degree murder. Updated court documents obtained at his arraignment Wednesday noted an additional charge of theft of a weapon. He is being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex without bail.
The 26-year-old was in court earlier this year after he rammed police and civilian vehicles trying to avoid being arrested on a warrant.
Schmaus’ family has been notified.
