The Anchorage Police Department has arrested a teenager in connection with an assault that took place on a bike trail in July, according to a release issued Wednesday.

On July 27, a woman told police a random male tried to sexually assault her while she was jogging on a trail near East High School. The man attempted to physically overpower her, but she was able to fight him off and get help from someone in the area, according to police.

On Wednesday, APD’s Special Victims Unit charged a 16-year-old for the attack, according to police spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

She said the teenager faces charges of first and second-degree attempted sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree assault.

“Due to the suspect’s age, arraignment will be handled through the Juvenile Justice System,” Oistad wrote in a Nixle.

While the suspect’s identity will not be released, Oistad did say that DNA and a suspect description “played a large part in the investigation and ultimate arrest” of the teen.

“Patrol officers alerted Detectives to a person matching the suspect description, seen in the same area, days after the initial report,” Oistad added.
