The Anchorage Police Department says officers on foot patrol helped capture a fleeing homicide suspect shortly after a fatal shooting in downtown Anchorage early Christmas Eve morning.
The shooting occurred at 3:10 a.m. in the alley behind the Gaslight Bar on Fourth Avenue, police said in a Nixle alert. Later, police identified the victim as 41-year-old James Moren.
Police said 36-year-old David Dennis and 46-year-old Roy Schauer were charged with Moren’s death.
Surveillance footage showed Dennis driving behind the bar moments before the shooting and giving Schauer a gun, according to police.
“As patrons were leaving the bar at about 3 a.m., Moren headed out the alley/parking lot behind the bar and Schauer followed him,” police explained in a statement. “Schauer shot him Moren several times before attempting to flee.”
The officers on foot patrol heard the shots and stopped Schauer as he attempted to flee the area. The officers recovered a gun from his pickup truck and police said they believed it to be the murder weapon.
Police said Moren and Schauer were acquaintances, but did not comment further on a motive in this case.
Both Schauer and Dennis face first- and second-degree murder charges, police stated. They are being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex without bail.
“This is the 32nd homicide this year,” Shell confirmed in an email.
Two other deaths followed the early morning homicide hours later. A couple was found shot in a Mountain View apartment shortly after witnesses overheard an argument and subsequent gunfire. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other died at a hospital from their injuries.
