A fire on West 23rd Avenue is being investigated as an arson and homicide, the Anchorage Police Department announced Wednesday.

Police and fire crews responded to the fire at a fourplex at 1:39 a.m. Tuesday, and after getting the fire under control, found a woman’s body, a statement from police explained.

“Investigators have determined this fire was intentionally set and the woman is a homicide victim,” police wrote in the statement. “For investigative purposes, her exact cause of death is not being released at this time.”

APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad stated police would also not elaborate at this time if the victim died before or during the fire.

Police said they will identify the victim after her next of kin have been notified of her death.

Oistad also noted that “An occupied vehicle was seen in the area around the time of the fire.” The vehicle is pictured in the video above, which was released by police.

Anyone with information about the fire, homicide or vehicle is asked to call Anchorage police at 907-786-8900. An anonymous tip can be submitted via Crime Stoppers online or by calling 907-561-7867.
