The Anchorage Fire Department is investigating two vehicle fires that happened early Friday morning on the same South Anchorage street.
Fire Investigator Brian Dean said firefighters were called to a report of a chevy pick-up on fire in the 8500 block of Blackberry St., just west of Dimond High School at around 3:45 a.m.
A short time later they responded to another fire, just two blocks away on the same street.
Dean said the fires were likely set on purpose and are being investigated as arsons.
Elisabeth Michlin said her 2014 Acura MDX had been parked in the driveway. She was sleeping when the doorbell rang. She went outside to see why fire trucks were in the street in front of her home.
“At first I thought my car had spontaneously combusted or something,” said Michlin. “But then they told me another vehicle had been lit on fire just down the road.”
Michlin said she had just moved to the neighborhood two days prior to the fire but still considered the area safe despite what happened.
“I don’t know if it’s necessarily a reflection on the neighborhood itself,” said Michlin. “But maybe more that crime in Anchorage is starting to get a little bit out of control.”
Both vehicles are considered totaled. Michlin said her costs should be covered by insurance.
