Fairbanks police have arrested a sport utility vehicle driver suspected of striking a boy on a bicycle and leaving the crash scene.

The boy suffered injuries police describe as “non-life-threatening.”

Police took a call on the crash just after 8:30 a.m. A boy riding a “mini bike” on 15th Avenue to Ryan Middle School was struck by a vehicle heading south on Schaible Street, police said in a statement. Police said the SUV dragged the bike at least six blocks to 21st Avenue, where the bike was later recovered.

After the crash, the boy remained conscious and was transported by ambulance to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

Police located the vehicle suspected to be involved in the crash, a maroon 1999 Jeep Cherokee. Police arrested 40-year-old Howard Martinez and charged him with leaving the scene of a collision involving injuries.

Martinez remained jailed Wednesday. Online court documents did not list his attorney.

“The Fairbanks Police Department would like to thank the Fairbanks Fire Department, Lathrop High School and the witnesses to this event for their help in this incident,” Fairbanks police wrote in a statement.

Police encouraged drivers to use extra caution in and around school zones “or anywhere that there may be children present.”
