An Utqiagvik teenager is in custody for the death of his father, hours after the teen had been arrested for burglary.

North Slope Borough police Sgt. James Michels and another officer responded to a Stevenson Street home around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday following a report of an attempted suicide, Michels wrote in his affidavit. When they arrived, Horace Simmonds let police into the home, where they found his father, Bart Ahsogeak, lying bloody and unresponsive on the floor. Michels noted that Simmonds told the officers he was sorry.

Medical personnel responded to the home and confirmed Ahsogeak was dead. Further investigation of his body revealed he had been shot twice in the chest and his throat had been cut, Michels wrote.

Simmonds allegedly told police he and his father had been arguing over a gun and Simmonds’ arrest earlier that day, according to Michels. Michels noted that Simmonds had been released into his father’s custody just five hours before the homicide.

“Horace Simmonds stated he pushed his father down the stairs and then shot him twice in the chest with a shotgun,” Michels wrote of his interview with Simmonds. “Horace Simmonds stated he did not think his father was dead so he took a knife and slit his throat.”

Investigators seized a 12-gauge shotgun, two spent shell casings and a kitchen knife from the home.

Police arrested Simmonds and charged him with first-degree murder. He was arraigned Friday afternoon.

Utqiagvik is the name for the community formerly known as Barrow.
