An armed man has been taken into custody after he barricaded himself inside an east Anchorage home Thursday morning, according to the Anchorage Police Department. Police have since released new details about the case.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, police explained that the standoff began after a 911 call just before 4 a.m. A female reported she had locked herself in a bathroom after her boyfriend, 26-year-old Michael Froyd, allegedly assaulted her by pointing a black .45 caliber handgun to her head, police wrote. She told police Froyd stated he was going to kill her.

Police responded to the home on the 1300 block of Boston Street, and an hour later, the female was able to escape outside to police.

“Officers cordoned off the area of Boston, and 12 and ASD were notified just in case there were school bus routes in the neighborhood,” police wrote.

SWAT also responded and finally deployed gas at the scene around 9:30 a.m. after attempting to negotiate with Froyd by way of a phone and a loudspeaker. Police wrote that the surrounding apartments were evacuated before the gas was deployed.

A few minutes after the gas was released, Froyd surrendered to officers at the front door, according to police.

Froyd was arrested on charges of third-degree misconduct involving a weapon and third-degree assault. Police say he was booked at the Anchorage Correctional Complex.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.
