Fairbanks police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that took place in a residence sometime Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release issued Thursday.
The victim, 24-year-old Vanessa Reese, and her estranged boyfriend, 26-year-old Thien Tran, were found dead from gunshot wounds inside Tran’s home.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that Tran shot Reese then killed himself,” Fairbanks Police Department public information officer Yumi McCulloch wrote.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Police Department reached out to the FPD after Reese failed to pick up her kids from the UAF childcare facility Wednesday.
One of Reese’s coworkers reported to police that she had left for lunch and had not returned. It was also reported to police that Tran had stopped by Reese’s workplace shortly after she left, wrote police.
One coworker told FPD Reese was planning to move out of Alaska to attend a nursing program she had recently been accepted into.
Prior to discovering the deceased, police determined that Reese and Tran had a history of domestic violence.
“The two young children were picked up from the childcare facility and are with a family friend,” the release states.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Alana Malloy at 907-450-6557.
If you or someone you know is currently dealing with a domestic violence situation, Fairbanks police encourage you to contact the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living at 907-452-2293.
