A man is facing federal charges after he attempted to steal an ATM from an Anchorage bank Monday.
Adrian Turnbow is also being investigated in connection with at least three other heists.
According to charging documents filed in federal court, Turnbow bragged to friends that he had stolen several ATMs from local banks, starting in late December. Turnbow told them he stole construction equipment — some from former employers — to remove the heavy machines.
On Monday, March 6, Turnbow was attempting to pull off what may have been his fourth ATM theft at the First National Bank of Alaska on Piper Street. A security guard spotted a man in a front-end loader attempting to remove the ATM in the drive-through lane at about 6 a.m. When police responded, according to charging documents, Turnbow stepped on the gas and lodged the loader in a snow bank. He tried to flee but was arrested by police a short time later.
Turnbow is charged with the theft of just one ATM, but he is a suspect in several others, including an ATM that was stolen from another First National Bank of Alaska branch last Wednesday. In that case, FBI officials believe Turnbow stole the machine but was unable to open it. He’s accused of putting it in the back of his truck and covering it with a tarp.
After the alleged heist, Turnbow’s truck, along with the ATM still in the back, was stolen by his acquaintances.
Jerd Thacker, Cristi Cozzette and Jordon Cook are now charged with possessing a stolen ATM, a federal crime. Alaska State Troopers caught up with them on a property near Big Lake Wednesday after Turnbow reported his truck had been stolen.
The suspects told investigators that all of them, including Turnbow, used heroin and were trying to get money from the ATM to buy more drugs.
