An Anchorage man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman with Down syndrome.
Thursday, an Anchorage jury found 36-year-old Michael Carl guilty of second- and third-degree sexual assault.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, the assault occurred at the Penland Parkway trailer park in June 2013. Police responded to a report of a “large disturbance” outside a trailer at around 1:30 a.m.
When officers arrived, one witness at the scene pointed to Carl and said he was the one who “raped the handicapped girl.”
According to court documents, the victim’s mother arrived home and discovered the Carl laying on the ground, naked, with the victim, who is significantly mentally handicapped and does not speak.
She then ran out of the trailer screaming.
Another male who heard the screaming entered the trailer and punched Carl in the mouth, according to police.
Responding officers noted that Carl was “very intoxicated” at the time they arrived.
Prosecutors allege Carl was aware the victim was handicapped “with very limited abilities to make decisions for herself.”
Carl’s sentencing is scheduled for August 2017. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
He will remain in jail until his sentencing.
