A 22-year-old Anchorage man was indicted Tuesday, accused of shooting a woman as he “danced around” his apartment during a party.

Just before 2 a.m. on Friday, June 2, officers responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex on Mockingbird Drive. The victim, 20-year-old Deborah Walunga, who lives in the apartment above suspect Joseph Lock, was found with a gunshot wound that entered her lower back and exited through her shoulder, puncturing her heart.

As a result of the shooting, Walunga is paralyzed from the waist down.

Anchorage Police say Lock was hosting a party at his apartment when a group of people he didn’t know arrived and one of them had a gun. Lock told police he checked the gun to see if it was loaded and fired at a stuffed giraffe. Then, later, while he was dancing around, he accidentally pulled the trigger again, according to Lock’s conversation with police, firing one shot into the ceiling.

Lock is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.

If convicted at trial, he faces five to nine years in prison for first-degree assault.
