ANCHORAGE – The fate of an Anchorage woman accused of a hit-and-run while drunk was decided Tuesday.
Kayla Johnson was found guilty of DUI, failure to render aid, first-degree assault, tampering with evidence, driving with a suspended license, operating a vehicle as a minor after consuming alcohol and hit-and-run.
The hit-and-run accident left 18-year-old Tevin George seriously injured. He spent months relearning how to walk after spending weeks in a coma, his parents said.
George was in the courtroom with his family that breathed a collective sigh of relief at the jury’s verdicts.
Johnson, on the other hand, was inconsolable after hearing she would be held accountable for the July 20, 2013 incident.
The jury returned the verdicts in just a few hours after hearing closing arguments Tuesday morning.
The defense argued that Johnson was not guilty because low visibility made the accident inevitable.
The prosecution retorted that Johnson’s admitted alcohol consumption left fault with her alone.
Jurors sided with the prosecution.
