ANCHORAGE – Alaska State Troopers are preparing to launch a new unit intended to fight property crimes in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.
According to a statement released by troopers Wednesday afternoon, the Criminal Suppression Unit would include one sergeant and three troopers. The unit is already working to collect information in anticipation of the unit’s Jan. 1 launch, troopers said.
The CSU would patrol areas of “known criminal activity” in marked vehicles, and troopers said the unit was founded after Mat-Su residents voiced concerns about the area’s high number of property crimes. The move was announced during a community forum Dec. 13, troopers said.
Gov. Sean Parnell’s 2014 budget proposal includes funding for an additional 17 trooper positions statewide, including five in the Mat-Su Valley.
