Anchorage police Sgt. John McKinnon is turning to the public for help in trying to learn more about John Giacalone.

“We haven’t drawn any conclusions from anything we’ve learned from his background,” McKinnon said.

The 55-year-old Giacalone is charged with Wednesday’s sexual assault on a teenager at Alaska Regional Hospital, where he worked as a security guard.

Alaska Regional Hospital CEO Julie Taylor said Giacalone’s background check turned up nothing before he started his job there in 2007, but investigators fear Giacalone may have committed other attacks at the hospital.

A John Giacalone also works as a forensic scientist at the state crime lab. A spokesperson declined to comment if it’s the same person, citing confidentiality laws. In video shot last month by KTVA at the crime lab, however, Giacalone is shown taking part in a “CSI Camp” involving teens. Prosecutors also confirmed Thursday that he worked at the lab.

Police want to hear from other security firms regarding Giacalone’s past.

“There are possibilities he may have worked at other security agencies in the community,” McKinnon said. ”He would have had even greater contact with people.”

Which leaves police with a greater concern about those possible victims.

Giacalone remains held on a $500,000 bond — an above-average amount for similar cases.
