A man is in custody after a fatal hit-and-run collision early Saturday morning.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, 54-year-old Guy Merculief man was struck and killed shortly after 2 a.m. in the area of 1500 E. Fifth Ave.
APD responded to the vehicle-pedestrian collision and learned that Merculief had been walking across Fifth Avenue in front of the Holiday Stationstore when a vehicle struck him. Police found Merculief lying in the roadway. He was pronounced deceased.
The vehicle, described to police as a red Honda Civic, fled the scene before the officers arrived, according to a statement from APD spokesperson Dani Myren.
Officers were able to locate the vehicle in a parking lot on Concrete Street. The suspect was found walking a short distance away.
Police later identified the driver as 22-year-old Pao Yang. Authorities collected a breath sample from Yang and found that he was driving with approximately two times the legal limit for alcohol in his system.
Yang was arrested on charges of manslaughter, operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. He is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday afternoon.
The victim’s next of kin have been notified, APD says.
