Original story
Police have arrested the 25-year-old man who fired a handgun in front of APD officers early Sunday morning.
William Jarrett IV has been a convicted felon since 2008 and “therefore is not allowed to either be in possession of a firearm or reside in a home where firearms are located,” according to a release from the Anchorage Police Department.
At about 4:45 a.m., APD responded to a South Anchorage residence after receiving a report of a theft and assault. Police say Jarrett lives at the home, located on the 12000 block of Atherton Rd., with a roommate.
“Jarrett and his roommate got into a verbal altercation, and then a physical one when Jarrett attempted to take possession of a firearm owned by the roommate,” APD says, adding that the roommate received minor cuts and abrasions. “Jarrett was ultimately able to grab the gun and left the house on foot with it.”
When APD officers caught up with Jarrett, he “refused to stop and produced the handgun from his backpack,” police say. While on the property of another resident, he fired the weapon into the ground and then ran away into the woods.
Police obtained an arrest warrant and spent time on Sunday searching for Jarrett.
At about 10:18 a.m., a man in the Bear Valley neighborhood told APD he spotted Jarrett based on the photos he’d “seen in the news earlier in the day.”
A K-9 unit and SWAT team members began tracking him just before 2:30 p.m.
At around 3:15 p.m., Jarrett was taken into custody after he was located and bitten by a police dog. Police say medics were called to the scene to treat the bite.
