Palins describe brawl in police recordings

Washington (CNN) – Bristol Palin describes being dragged through the grass and called a series of obscenities during a massive brawl last month in recordings of Anchorage police interviews that CNN obtained through a public records request.

She said she jumped into a fight after “some old lady” pushed her sister, Willow Palin, because “oh f***in’ hell no, no one’s gonna touch my sister.”

When she tried to find the woman, though, she said a man who others identified as Korey Klingenmeyer, the owner of the house where the party took place, knocked her down.

“A guy comes out of nowhere and pushes me on the ground, takes me by my feet in my dress — in my thong dress in front of everybody — [and says] ‘Come on you c***, get the f*** out of here. Come on you s***, get the f*** out of here,” she said.

No charges were filed as a result of the September brawl.

Other people interviewed by police described the Palins as instigators in a brawl that also reportedly included Track Palin and his father, Todd, fighting several men.

They said Bristol Palin punched Klingenmeyer several times before he restrained her.

Klingenmeyer said he’d approached Todd Palin to say that “your daughter’s out of line” and that he should get the situation under control. That didn’t happen.

“I told ‘em all to get the hell out of here and go home,” he said.

He said the altercation with Bristol Palin started after she insisted she was going to beat another woman up.

“I said ‘this is my house, we’re not having this,’” Klingenmeyer said. “She freakin’ goes, ‘I’ll kick your a**.’”

He said Bristol Palin punched him several times, and then he grabbed her fist, made a motion that isn’t described verbally, and then she “fell down.”

Sarah Palin can apparently be heard in the background during some of the interviews. At one point, she complained that her children were being “made to feel like the bad guys.”

She also criticizes Klingenmeyer, saying: “What would he be doin’ pushin’ girls around, though?”

Matthew McKenna, whose birthday was the reason for the party, told police that people had gotten “drunk and stupid” — and that he had video of the altercation, but wouldn’t share it.

“I know everyone here, and it’s just an unfortunate deal,” he said.

A Soldotna man is in custody after troopers say he kidnapped and assaulted a female at a residence off the Kenai Spur Highway.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, Alaska State Troopers and Central Emergency Services responded to a report of disturbance at the Soldotna residence at around 12:45 p.m. and were able to locate the person who reported the incident, according to an online AST dispatch posted Tuesday,

Further investigation by troopers revealed that 47-year-old Charles Brady had assaulted a female at the residence for “several days.” Troopers say Brady took the female’s phone and would not allow her to leave.

Brady left the residence before authorities arrived. With the help of the Soldotna Police Department, Brady was located around 2:30 p.m. at another residence in Soldotna and taken into custody.

The female suffered serious physical injuries and was transported to Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment, troopers say.

Brady was transported to Wildwood Pretrial Facility where he was held without bail. According to dispatch, he was charged with kidnapping, two counts of second-degree assault, one count of fourth-degree assault and interfering with a report of a domestic-violence crime.

Attempts to retrieve charging documents from the Kenai court clerk’s office Tuesday were unsuccessful.

‘Alaskan Bush People’ stars charged with PFD fraud

A family that stars in the Discovery Channel show “Alaskan Bush People” is facing a slew of charges for felony Permanent Fund Dividend fraud, court documents reveal.

Billy Brown, his wife and their seven children are featured in the show that describes them as “born and raised in the wild,” according to Discovery’s website. “They’ve developed their own accent and dialect, refer to themselves as a ‘wolf pack,’ and at night, all nine sleep together in a one-room cabin. Simply put, they are unlike any other family in America.”

On Oct. 3, a Juneau grand jury indicted six of the family members for applying for and receiving the PFD when they did not meet the “physical presence” program requirements, according to a statement from the Alaska Department of Law. The charges, 60 in total, relate to false statements made between 2010 and 2013.

Billy faces the most charges, 24, and is accused of swindling more than $10,000.

The charges are as follows:

  • Billy Brown: 12 counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and 12 counts of second-degree theft
  • Amora L. Brown: four counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and four counts of second-degree theft
  • Joshua Brown: four counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and two counts of second-degree theft
  • Solomon Brown: four counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and four counts of second-degree theft
  • Gabriel Brown: four counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and four counts of second-degree theft
  • Noah Brown: three counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and three counts of second-degree theft

Many Alaskans receive a PFD — which comes from investment profits from Alaska’s oil-wealth savings account — when they have lived in the state for at least one year. First-degree unsworn falsification and second-degree theft are class C felonies and carry a maximum penalty of five years and a fine up to $50,000, the DOL said.

A warrant is being issued for a driver’s arrest after the motorist lead Alaska State Troopers on a high-speed chase and damaged a patrol vehicle, causing minor injuries to a trooper early Thursday morning.

Shortly before 1 a.m., troopers stopped a black 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee on West Claiborne Drive near Hollywood Road in Wasilla for “multiple” traffic and moving violations, according to an online dispatch.

Troopers contacted and identified the driver, who then fled the traffic stop “nearly running over the Trooper,” the dispatch says.

The driver then lead AST on a 10-minute, high-speed chase through nearby neighborhoods, during which the suspect rammed a trooper vehicle twice, “causing both extensive damage to the patrol vehicle and minor injury to the trooper,” AST wrote.

The driver then fled down an ATV trail, troopers say. Troopers are withholding the driver’s identity “as warrants are being issued for the person’s arrest,” according to the dispatch.

Troopers ask anyone with information to call AST at 745-2131 or Crime Stoppers at 745-3333.

Police are asking for help investigating the death of a dog found hanging from a tree near the University of Alaska Anchorage earlier this month.

A man walking in the woods near East 20th Avenue and Rosemary Street made the gruesome discovery Oct. 10, according to a Thursday afternoon statement from the Anchorage Police Department. The pit bull’s throat was slashed, police said.

The dog’s owner was contacted after Anchorage Animal Care and Control officers discovered the animal was microchipped. The owner said the pit bull, named Snoop, was a beloved family pet who lived with them in the Penland Mobile Home Park and ran away about a week before he was found in the woods.

Police said anyone with information regarding the “act of extreme animal cruelty” should call Anchorage Crime Stoopers at 907-561-STOP, or click here.

Placed on leave earlier this year while under investigation by the FBI, a Fairbanks priest has now been indicted for child exploitation.

Friday, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office announced 57-year-old Clint Michael Landry was formally charged with attempted production of child pornography and attempted coercion and enticement of a minor. According to court documents, Landry tried to entice a minor to “engage in sexually explicit conduct” in order to produce “a visual depiction of that conduct.”

The indictment, dated Oct. 22, states the alleged crimes took place between May 18-19.

Landry became a priest for the Diocese of Fairbanks in 2011, according to its website. If convicted, Landry faces up to $250,000 in fines for each of the two counts and a maximum life sentence, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office said. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Reardon, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday afternoon.

Last updated Monday, Oct. 27

An Anchorage doctor has been suspended of all privileges from Providence Alaska Medical Center after he was charged with sexually abusing children.

On July 31, it was reported to Alaska State Troopers’ Child Abuse Investigation Unit that a 12-year-old had been “touched inappropriately” by Clifford Merchant, 67, at his property in the Mat-Su Valley, according to an online AST dispatch.

Interviews were then conducted at the Children’s Place in Wasilla. The interviews resulted in a disclosure of abuse, troopers say. Further investigation revealed there were two other victims, both younger than 13 years old, at the time of the offenses, according to court documents.

The alleged crimes took place around 2001-2003, 2007-2009 and 2013 at Merchant’s Anchorage home and Shell Lake cabin, the charges say. The victims were as young as 7 years old, according to AST.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, Merchant was indicted on 12 counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and three counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, according to court documents.

Providence spokesman Mike Canfield says Merchant was a physician who had privileges to see patients at the hospital, but he is not a Providence employee. In an email, Canfield says Merchant worked in the hospital’s emergency department. He says the hospital took immediate action after learning of the case.

Friday, an arrest warrant was issued for Merchant for $500,000 cash bail and court-approved third party. The doctor was arrested on Saturday by Alaska State Troopers and Anchorage Airport Police, where he was taken to Anchorage Correctional Facility. Merchant appeared in court on Sunday.

Canfield says Providence is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation and will notify the Alaska State Medical Board. A statement from Providence also reported that the hospital will work with law enforcement agencies to determine whether a process for identifying other potential victims is appropriate.

Judge sentences Anchorage rapist to 25 years in prison

Today, an Anchorage Superior Court judge sentenced an Anchorage man to 25 years in prison for tying up a teen girl and raping her.

Earlier this year, 18-year-old Jessye Potts pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault. Police say Potts knew the 17-year-old girl he bound with duct tape and sexually assaulted on New Year’s Day in Anchorage. He released the girl and allowed her to escape only after she promised she wouldn’t report the crime to authorities.

His sentencing on Monday afternoon took several hours. There, the court was able to hear from the female victim.

“It could have been just a walk. It should have been just a walk, but it wasn’t,” the victim said. “Instead, I got raped. I lost everything I used to have.”

As she addressed the court, she noted that after the Jan. 1 incident, her life hasn’t been the same.

“What happened on January 1, 2014 killed the old me,” she said. “I’m not the person I used to be. I can never say that I’m happy. I’ve never used the word happy all year.”

Potts was able to address the court as well. In his statement, he apologized to the victim directly.

“I’m sorry for my string of poor decisions and how they’ve hurt you, [victim's initials],” said Potts. “I’m sorry for everyone that’s had to deal with the repercussions of my actions. I will try my hardest to change how I act and try to successfully rehabilitate from this devious act as well as my drug addiction.”

Judge Michael Spaan, who handed down the sentence, spoke to the psychological effects of rape and sexual assault.

“It’s the emotional scars you put her through that are going to be with her forever,” Spaan said to Potts. “Her head is going to heal just fine. The issue is you raping her and what that’s going to do to her and her family.”

Because of the nature of the crime, Potts is not eligible for early release due to good behavior. He was also sentenced to 15 years of probation.

A man suspected of firing shots at a Fairbanks home last week has been charged with felony weapons misconduct.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1DqpQhA) reports 35-year-old Ray Tyron Clemons was arrested Saturday.

A man in east Fairbanks at 10:30 p.m. Thursday reported shots outside his home. One struck a baseboard heater and another broke a window.

Police recovered two bullets from a large-caliber handgun.

Police say a man in the home’s lower unit was the apparent victim.

Police with a search warrant recorded calls between the man and Clemons. Prosecutors say Clemons was recorded telling the man he wanted money and the return of property.

Clemons remained jailed Tuesday with bail set at $20,000. He is represented by the public defender’s office, which routinely does not comment on open cases.

A Fairbanks woman narrowly avoided falling victim to a scam artist who told her she had won the Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes.

Barbara Reed says she regularly enters, so at first believed a caller Monday who said she had won $350,000 and a red Mercedes.

She tells the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1tioyTb) the man even asked if she wanted the media present when the prizes were handed over.

There was one catch. The man said Reed would have to go to wire him $490 to claim the prize.

She did, but stopped payment after calling Publishers Clearing House and learning the company notifies its winners by mail or in person and doesn’t require payments.

Lt. Matt Soden of the Fairbanks Police Department says similar scams pop up every few months.

A Fairbanks man suspected of shearing off a telephone pole when his truck pulled down an overhead wire has been issued a reckless driving summons.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1pb91pU) reports 58-year-old James Knopke on Sept. 12 was pulling a trailer behind a 7.5-ton military surplus vehicle, which had a 16-foot homemade boom attached to it.

On a south Fairbanks road, the truck hit a bump. The boom bounced up, snagged a telephone wire and pulled down a telephone pole.

Fairbanks International Airport police say in a complaint the boom smashed into the canopy of the vehicle.

Police say Knopke stopped when he experienced steering problems caused by the sheared-off canopy getting stuck between the vehicle and the trailer.

Online court documents did not list an attorney for Knopke.

Anchorage man, 7 others indicted in drug trafficking, money laundering conspiracies

$

Eight people, including one Anchorage man, in four states have been indicted for conspiring to distribute heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine in Alaska and for laundering money.

In all, 50 pounds of heroin, 5 kilograms of cocaine, 38 pounds of meth and $70,000 were seized as a result of the charges, according to the U.S. district attorney’s office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Courter confirms that the drugs have a wholesale value of $2.34 million — based on distribution at the pound and kilogram level.

The actual street value, she says, could be well over $10 million, if the drugs were broken down into grams and ounces. This estimate, Courter adds, is based on trends that are being monitored by the Anchorage Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

One indictment charges 51-year-old Timothy George Alex of Anchorage with conspiring to distribute cocaine, heroin and meth. Alex is also charged with attempting to possess cocaine earlier this year. The indictment seeks a $70,000 forfeiture in money associated with alleged proceeds from Alex’s drug distribution activities, says Courter.

Another indictment charges two Texas men — Omar Alejandro Alfaro and Jose Ramon Canales — with conspiring to distribute Alaska-bound heroin and meth. The indictment also charges Genaro Gutierrez-Reyes of California with conspiring to move drug money from the U.S. to Mexico, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.

Investigators found heroin hidden in an Anchorage storage unit and packaging materials. The suspects also sold three kilograms of heroin and two pounds of meth to an undercover agent in Alaska.

A third indictment charges four others from California and Arizona — Tomas Gutierrez Ayala, Geronimo Arellano Velarde, Cristian Giovanni Lugo and Jasmin Sanchez — with conspiring to distribute “large quantities” of meth and cocaine, the district attorney’s office says. In total, the conspiracy was responsible for the distribution or attempted distribution of about 5 kilograms of cocaine and 34 pounds of meth.

For the drug charges, all of the defendants except Alex face a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence and up to a maximum sentence of life in prison, if convicted. For his involvement in the drug distribution, Alex faces a five-year mandatory minimum sentence and a maximum of 40 years in prison, if convicted.

Two men have been arrested for transporting heroin to Kodiak, police say.

According to a release from the Kodiak Police Department, 26-year-old Gregory Pruitt and 28-year-old Kevleen Clark were taken into custody by Alaska State Troopers when their ferry docked in Kodiak on Friday.

Troopers say they found approximately 15 grams of heroin, packaged in small quantities, for distribution.

The street value in Kodiak for the seized drugs is estimated at $7,500, according to the release.

Pruitt and Clark were arrested for second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance — a felony carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison — and fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance — punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.

Both were arraigned in court on Nov. 1. Pruitt’s bail was set at $20,000; Clark’s was set at $15,000.

Jake Taylor Crain of Fort Wainwright is charged with impersonating a public servant. The 18-year-old was arrested over the weekend after troopers previously warned him about using flashing red-and -white lights on his pickup truck.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://ow.ly/DOc5h) reports that according to a criminal complaint filed in court, Crain was driving at 90 mph with emergency lights on the Richardson Highway on Saturday. Troopers seized the lights as evidence.

According to the Fairbanks Correctional Center, Crain remains held at the jail Tuesday on $2,500 bail. His public defender couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
