A 23-year-old Fort Wainwright soldier is facing robbery and theft charges after he and other suspect allegedly robbed pedestrians at gunpoint.

Early Sunday morning, Fairbanks Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of two suspects, carrying a shotgun and a pistol, robbing pedestrians, according to a statement from Amber Courtney, spokeswoman for the City of Fairbanks.

At 1:17 a.m. Sunday, police received a report that two male pedestrians near a strip club on Rewak Drive had been robbed. According to the victims, two males had approached them in a vehicle, which was driven by a third suspect. They allegedly threatened the victims with firearms and stole a wallet and a cellphone, Courtney wrote.

Police investigation resulted in soldier Keith A. Downing being taken into custody and charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and one count each of third- and fourth-degree theft for two separate incidents. Additionally, authorities suspect Downing was involved in a third robbery during the same timeframe.

The second armed suspect and driver are still being sought for questioning, the release says. The suspects were driving a gray 2005 Volkswagen Jetta with license plate ESD903. People with additional information on the string of robberies are encouraged to contact Detective Adams at 450-6478 or Detective Mallory at 450-6557.

A 28-year-old Fairbanks man has been charged with selling 454 pounds of stolen copper.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1GPB6aV) reports Curtis James Wrightsman was charged last week with burglary and theft.

Prosecutors say he sold copper tubes and fittings valued at $7,000 to $10,000 as scrap for $708.

Dayn Cooper, the owner of a building maintenance company, in October discovered that he was missing the metal. He told police the fittings had been packed in plastic bags.

He called scrap metal companies and one confirmed the purchase from a man who had packed the metal in a car trunk.

Police linked the car’s license plate to a friend of Wrightsman.

Wrightsman remained jailed Monday at Fairbanks Correctional Center. Online court records did not list a defense attorney in the case.

Donated goods stolen from ARC of Anchorage on Christmas Eve

$

The ARC of Anchorage seems to exude the spirit of Christmas — tucked away off Northern Lights in East Anchorage, surrounded by snow-covered stands of spruce – you’re more likely to encounter a cross-country skier instead of a drive-by thief.

But this year’s season of giving has turned into one of taking. Instead of waiting for clothes and other secondhand goods to turn up for sale at Value Village, thieves are helping themselves to donations.

At least twice a week, donation bins have been raided in the early morning hours.

Surveillance footage shows the same thieves came back twice this week. The video shows one burglar emptying the bins and a driver cruising by to pick. The same car was spotted again on Christmas Eve morning.

“They’re taking away directly from the programs from the ARC of Anchorage,” said Ian Casey, operations manager at the ARC of Anchorage. “They’re taking away from people who experience developmental disabilities.”

“I think it’s terrible,” said Anne Burch, who has received job training from the ARC. “I think it’s selfish.”

Burch, who works the phones to ask for donations, says it deprives families who can’t afford to buy new things.

The thefts and damage have run into the thousands of dollars and involve more than just the bins.

After thieves broke into a fenced-in area, fuel lines were cut in some of the ARC’s delivery trucks and the tanks were drained. Equipment was also stolen.

The main tool to gain access seems to be a bolt cutter.

Casey picked up a busted lock in front of a bin that was broken into Wednesday morning.

“It’s frustrating,” he said, holding the lock that had just been replaced.

“The people who put their donations in the donation box last night, they thought they were going to be helping the ARC of Anchorage and instead it got stolen,” said Casey.

Casey said Anchorage Police have been investigating the thefts – and ARC has its own nightly security patrols; but so far, the drive-by burglars have avoided being caught in the act.

The ARC is asking people to put their donations in the bins only during business hours, when they’re checked on a regular basis. Better yet, call and ask for pick-up.

More info about scheduling a pickup.

A woman in Fairbanks was arrested on a first-degree murder charge Wednesday after police say she called them to admit to killing her cousin.

At around 1 p.m., 25-year-old Emmalee Clark called the Fairbanks Police Department stating she had shot and killed her cousin, 33-year-old Jeanelle Clark, according to a release from the Fairbanks police.

When authorities responded to the call, they found the victim dead from a gunshot wound at a residence on Gillam Way. Investigators believe the fatal shooting occurred early Wednesday morning.

Clark was arrested for first-degree murder and transported to the Fairbanks Correctional Facility.

The victim’s next-of-kin have been notified, police say.

Eagle River robbery suspects sought money, drugs

The three men accused of breaking into an Eagle River home earlier this week allegedly sought money and drugs in the robbery, according to court documents.

One of the men — 35-year-old Ryan Duane Calhoun-Moody — was arraigned in District court Wednesday and charged with first-degree robbery and two counts of third-degree assault.

The other two men, 34-year-old Matthew Lee Fox and 28-year-old Brion Michael Ingram, will be arraigned in court Friday. They face charges of first-degree robbery, as well as third- and -fourth-degree assault charges.

The three men planned to steal a “backpack filled with heroin and thousands of dollars” from inside the Eagle River home of Fox’s half-brother, according to court documents.

At 10:30 p.m., Ingram and Calhoun-Moody forced their way into the house, court documents say. A male resident, asleep at the time, woke up and confronted the two unknown men. Ingram then “pistol-whipped” the man and shot him in the leg, the documents say.

The homeowner’s wife reported hearing “yelling and a pop.” The two intruders then opened the door to her bedroom. She grabbed her 3-month-old baby, afraid the child would be shot, court documents say.

Another resident, asleep in the basement at the time, reported that her backpack was stolen during the break-in.

Following the robbery, Calhoun-Moody fled the scene on foot and was later arrested by police. Ingram allegedly jumped into a getaway car driven by Fox. Once caught, Calhoun-Moody gave police a description of Fox’s vehicle and informed them that the two were likely at the Alaska Backpackers Inn, in downtown Anchorage.

Police located the vehicle and arrested Fox and Ingram at the Backpackers Inn — but not before the suspect vehicle rammed into multiple police cars.

Man wanted in connection with infant daughter’s death in Spenard Motel

A warrant was issued Dec. 19 for the arrest of a man in connection with his infant daughter’s death that occurred in June, according to court documents.

On the night of June 24, police received a call regarding the death of an infant at the Spenard Motel, according to court documents. When authorities responded, they found a 2-month-old baby deceased in a motel room on the kitchen counter.

Investigation revealed that the infant, whose mother was in custody at the time, was living in the motel room with her father, 29-year-old Aaron Vanormer. He now faces a manslaughter charge.

An uncle had also been assisting with care of the infant but left town for work a few days prior to the incident. The uncle revealed to investigators later that Vanormer would smoke what he believed was spice and “would become disoriented by the effects of the substance,” court documents say.

The victim’s grandfather, Frank Turner, says he went to check on Vanormer and the infant after not hearing from him for a few days. When he entered the motel room, Vanormer was in the bedroom “acting strangely” and the room was disheveled, charging documents say. The grandfather then went looking for the infant and found her in the bathtub.

“He felt her chest and noticed that she was cold and not breathing,” the charging documents state. “He quickly ran out of the bathroom and started yelling for someone to call 911.”

When the grandfather returned, Vanormer had moved his daughter’s body to the kitchen area of the room. When officers from the Anchorage Police Department arrived, “Vanormer was sitting in the bedroom and seemed to be distraught,” the documents say. He said the infant’s mother came to the motel room and placed the baby in the tub with her head “out of the water.”

An argument took place between Vanormer and the baby’s mother, he alleges in the court documents, later saying that he must have been hallucinating — though he denied taking any drugs or drinking alcohol. Police didn’t make an arrest that night.

An autopsy conducted on the baby’s body revealed a small amount of fluid in the infant’s lungs, “but not enough to conclusively say that her cause of death was drowning,” the documents state, adding that there were no signs of trauma that could account for her death. The autopsy did indicate that the infant had likely been deceased for several hours prior to her grandfather discovering her.

An “apparent suicide note” turned up as officers conducted a search of the motel room:

To the family: I am so sorry that I could help bring such a beautiful girl in this world and then snuff that life right out I could not go on living looking at you all and be like nothing happened.

Vanormer later denied writing the note, the court documents say. When he was later in custody, however, he expressed “suicidal ideations,” including feeling responsible for his daughter’s death.

Charging documents detail Vanormer’s extensive criminal history, including two prior felony charges. A District court judge has issued a $50,000 arrest warrant for the manslaughter charge.

Convicted militia leader Schaeffer Cox is seeking a second delay in his appeal for a conviction of conspiring to murder public officials, soliciting others to commit murder and weapons charges.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1xujXCG) reports the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in September granted an attorney for Cox a 90-day extension to file opening briefs.

Appeal attorney Myra Sun has requested another 30 days to prepare, citing the volume of case material. Sun says the record in the case includes more than 500 pages and hundreds of exhibits.

No suspects are in custody after cash, pills and tobacco were stolen from two offices in the western Alaska city of Kwethluk, authorities say.

Friday, Alaska State Troopers received a report that $2,000 had been swiped from a safe in the Kwethluk City Office. Troopers responded Saturday, where they discovered a padlock on the front door had been cut and removed, an AST dispatch says. Drag marks on the floor also indicated the safe had been set on a sled and drug out of the building.

No footprints were found because of recent snowfall, and there are no suspects as of Monday afternoon. The safe has not been recovered.

The thievery continued as troopers received another report Saturday that the Kwethluk Post Office had also been broken into. According to troopers, a suspect, or suspects, forced open a cargo door and opened several packages, taking items that included pills and tobacco.

Footprints and a handprint were spotted in the snow outside, an AST dispatch says. The U.S. Postal Service was contacted about the burglary and a postal inspector will look into the incident.

Troopers encourage anyone with information about the two burglaries to contact Bethel troopers at 907-543-2294.

Police have released the man suspected of shooting another at the Foxwood Condominiums in South Anchorage Monday afternoon.

The man was detained by police, questioned, then released Monday night, said Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro. No charges have been filed.

Castro says officers have a few more interviews to complete before handing the case over to the District Attorney’s Office. They will then decide if the case warrants charges or if it was self-defense.

The victim in the shooting is still in an Anchorage hospital, Castro said.

Anchorage sees second-lowest number of homicides in 20-plus years

Anchorage is on track to finish 2014 with the second lowest number of homicides since 1991, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

APD says 14 homicides have taken place this year, including the shooting death of Jermaine Twiley at a Mountain View apartment complex on March 4. Police said Talon Draper shot Twiley, his next door neighbor, during an argument.

Department investigators say they are not sure why the number of murders continues to fall in the muni, but even one is too many.

“Fourteen homicides is 14 victims with 14 different histories, families, loved ones that were affected by it, and the whole community at large,” said Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz with APD’s homicide unit.

Police have not released the number of unsolved homicides in the muni, but the Anchorage Crime Stoppers’ website lists three for the year — the January murder of Aylett Hanson and a double homicide in March where a homeless couple was killed.

APD is encouraging residents with any information on these two incidents to call Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP.

A Fort Wainwright man suspected of pretending to be an Alaska State Trooper has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor impersonation of a public servant.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1Bi7Zth) reports 19-year-old Jake Taylor Crain reached a plea agreement with prosecutors on the charge and was sentenced to 14 days in jail, which he had already served while awaiting the outcome of the case.

Crain in November was arrested by Alaska State Troopers, who took complaints that Crain had used police-style lights to pull drivers over on the Richardson Highway.

Prosecutors presented a case of felony impersonation to a Fairbanks grand jury, but jurors declined to indict Crain.

Crain as part of the plea agreement forfeited his lights. He also was issued a $300 speeding ticket.

Anchorage police search for 3rd juvenile suspect in trailer park stabbing

Police are searching for a third juvenile suspect after two 13-year-olds were charged with assault following a stabbing at an Anchorage mobile home park overnight.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Anchorage Police Department received a report that a man had been stabbed outside a home on the 2600 block of North Tahiti Loop, located in the Manoog’s Isle mobile home park near the intersection of Lake Otis Parkway and East Dowling Road. Police responded and the man was taken to a local hospital with multiple stab wounds. He was in stable condition, APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said in a statement around 9:15 Wednesday morning.

It was reported to police that the man was walking home when three juveniles approached him. A fight broke out between the man and the youth, who were reportedly trying to steal his wallet, Castro wrote. The man was stabbed in the back by one of the juveniles, and the trio then fled.

APD combed the area for suspects with a K-9 in tow, and authorities located two of the three suspects near Dowling Road. The two 13-year-olds were detained, questioned, taken to the McLaughlin Youth Center and charged with second-degree assault.

Police tried to find the third suspect but were unable to locate him. A witness described him as an Alaska Native male with shoulder-length hair, wearing dark clothing and with a cut on his hand from the stabbing, Castro said. Police ask anyone with information to contact them at 786-8900.

Around the time of the stabbing, police received a call from a female resident on the nearby 2500 block of Guam Avenue who said three juveniles — described similarly to the trio involved in the stabbing — were trying to steal things from her porch, Castro said. She said she confronted the youth and they ran away.

“When citizens do come across suspicious circumstances, even if it’s seeing someone digging through your trash or looking through mailboxes, report that information to police because that incident could actually be part of another incident,” Castro said.

Man accused of shooting at cops takes plea deal

A face-and-eye tattooed man accused of shooting at cops in September 2012 has taken a plea deal and will spend 26 years in prison with four years suspended.

Friday, Jason Barnum — also known as “Eyeball” — pleaded guilty to attempted murder, burglary and misconduct involving a weapon, said Assistant District Attorney Clint Campion.

Anchorage police say Barnum shot at them during a standoff at the Merrill Field Inn after officers investigating a string of burglaries traced a stolen car to the area. Police were able to connect three people to the car, one of whom was Barnum. Officer Dan Thyen was injured in the shooting.

According to charging documents, Barnum admitted to stealing from homes to feed his heroin addiction. Several officers attended the Friday court appearance where Campion says Barnum apologized.

While Barnum may have apologized, Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew offered a contrasting view of Barnum’s character.

“I propose that Jason Barnum sets in motion cascading events he intends not to curtail,” Mew said addressing the court. “When presented with decision points- crossroads where he has options that could aggravate or mitigate- he invariably selects the most provocative, the most violent. Mr. Barnum’s life is a runaway freight train. He won’t control it, and we can’t. The court must take this opportunity to protect the public from more of Jason Barnum.”

Alaska State Troopers arrested a man on murder and assault charges after the body of a White Mountain woman was discovered Thursday morning.

Troopers reported receiving word of a death at 10 a.m. Esther Lincoln, 40, was subsequently found dead in her home, according to an AST online dispatch.

The initial investigation led troopers to arrest 31-year-old Gilbert Olanna, also of White Mountain. Olanna was remanded to the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center on one count of first-degree murder, two counts of tampering with evidence and one count of fourth-degree assault.

Court records show Olanna has a history of assault, sexual assault and domestic violence. The investigation into the death is ongoing, troopers say.

2 injured after shooting at house party in Northeast Anchorage

Anchorage police are investigating a shooting at a house party early Saturday morning in Northeast Anchorage that left two people injured.

At around 4 a.m., the Anchorage Police Department received multiple reports of gunshots heard in the area of the 2400 block of Brookshire Loop, near Muldoon Road. Police also received a report of a “loud party” with approximately 50 people at a Brookshire Loop residence, according to a release from APD.

When police responded to the call, multiple vehicles were leaving the scene.

“Police received additional information reporting that a male had possibly been shot and was let inside the residence,” APD says, adding that officers found a blood trail inside and outside the residence, but were unable to locate the victim.

Later, APD received information that there was a male with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound at a local hospital.

“The victim was identified as having been at the reported residence where the shooting took place,” APD says.

Police say another male had also shown up at a different hospital with injuries to his head, “claiming he had been pistol-whipped at the party.”

The only information the two victims provided about the shooter was that he was a “Samoan male with long hair,” APD says.

Police are hoping that some of the partygoers who fled the residence will provide some information to police, says APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

“The thing that people have to realize is that this may have not been the first time this person has fired a gun and it probably won’t be the last,” said Castro. “And someone who’s willing to take this kind of action in our community, it’s something that we want to prevent from happening in the future and possibly prevent a loss of life.”

Police are encouraging anyone with information on the shooting to call APD at 786-8900 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP.

No arrests have been made at this time, police say.

The man accused of killing his girlfriend in White Mountain appeared in Nome District Court Saturday.

Gilbert Olanna, Jr., 31, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend, 40-year-old Esther Lincoln.

At about 9:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Olanna went to a neighbor to get help for Lincoln, according to charging documents. A health aide responded to the home Olanna and Lincoln shared and “found her on a mattress dead” with bruises to her neck.

When Alaska State Troopers responded, Olanna told them that he’d been drinking heavily in the early morning hours of the new year. When he returned home, he and Lincoln argued.

“In the course of this, Olanna explained, his arm slipped below Lincoln’s chin and around her neck,” the charging documents say, detailing that he held his hands around her neck until she went limp.

Lincoln also sustained head injuries, and Olanna admitted to striking her in the face, the documents say. Olanna admitted to authorities that before he left to get the health aide, he “cleaned and put clothing on her body.”

Olanna is also charged with fourth-degree assault and two counts of tampering with physical evidence. Court records show he has a history of assault, sexual assault and domestic violence.
