Two people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and a man is in custody after stabbings at an Anchorage home Friday morning, police say.

Friday afternoon, Martin Victor IV, 40, was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree assault, according to an online statement from police.

The Anchorage Police Department received a call about a “disturbance” at a residence on the 1600 block of Medfra Street, located in Fairview, around 9:15 a.m., according to a statement from APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

The two victims — a man and a woman — are a couple, Castro said Friday afternoon. They are reportedly stable after suffering “severe injuries,” according to APD.

Castro could not go into specifics about the relationship between Victor and the couple, but she said it’s her understanding they all lived in the home together.

Neighbor Savanah Fielding said she was sitting in her car when she saw a woman in a nightgown run up to the home where the incident is believed to have occurred.

“And it was just odd because she was in a nightgown and I’ve never seen her before,” Fielding said.

Then, Fielding said, the woman and a male exited the home. The male asked a female at a nearby bus stop if she had a phone and if she could call 911, Fielding said.

The cops showed up a few minutes later, but not before Fielding said she saw a person dart out of the home.

Victor was taken into custody without incident, Castro said. Police are still determining what led up to the stabbings, but it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were factors.

Editor’s note: An initial release from police misspelled the name of the suspect in this case. An earlier version of this story included that error, which has since been corrected.

The trial of 59-year-old Arvin Kangas opened with accounts of the fatal shooting of two Alaska State Troopers in the remote Yukon River village of Tanana.

The Fairbanks News-Miner reports that the trial began Thursday. Kangas is accused of tampering with evidence by unholstering and moving the troopers’ guns after their deaths and disposing of marijuana plants.

Kangas’ 21-year-old son, Nathanial Kangas, is awaiting trial on murder charges for the shooting of trooper Gabe Rich and Sgt. Scott Johnson.

The assistant attorney general said the troopers were planning to arrest the elder Kangas for threatening a public safety officer.

Arvin Kangas’ wife testified she was in a separate room during the shootings and feared being shot herself.

She said she later saw Arvin Kangas wearing a glove and holding a trooper’s handgun.

One man is dead and another is in critical condition after a double shooting in the Montana Creek area of Talkeetna.

At about 1 a.m. Saturday, the Palmer Police Department received a 911 call notifying them that a person had been killed, according to a Alaska State Troopers dispatch.

“The 911 call came from a man who said he had just shot someone,” said AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen.

No other information was provided in the call, which came from a cell phone, AST says.

It took troopers in Talkeetna several hours — using information from the cell phone provider – to locate the scene. Two males with apparent gunshot wounds were discovered inside the residence, AST says. One of the males was pronounced dead at the scene; the other was flown to an Anchorage hospital in critical condition.

“There is no indication that there is anyone involved in this other than the two men who were found on scene,” said Ipsen. “Troopers have yet to identify the deceased male, and we’re not releasing the name of the other man until his family has been notified.”

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is now at the scene “gathering evidence and trying to piece everything together,” Ipsen said.

A motorcyclist is in the hospital in critical condition after he was struck by a driver who police believe was impaired.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Anchorage Police Department responded to the collision, near the intersection of Debarr Road and Edward Street, in East Anchorage.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a motorcyclist, who APD is identifying as a 47-year-old male, was traveling westbound on Debarr Road and was stopped at a red light near the intersection of Edward Street. Police say a 2008 white Mercedes struck the motorcyclist from behind. The Mercedes, driven by 44-year-old Franklin Townsend, kept going another 50 feet through the intersection before the vehicle came to a stop.

“Several witnesses observed the collision and thought the driver of the Mercedes may be intoxicated,” court documents say.

When APD made contact with Townsend, “officers could smell an odor of alcohol,” a release from APD says. After Townsend failed standard field sobriety tests, he was arrested and charged with OUI and third-degree assault and refusal to submit — after he refused a breathalyzer test at the Anchorage Jail. other charges. He was then taken to the Anchorage Jail, where APD says he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test.

According to court documents, Townsend has prior convictions of operating a vehicle while impaired.

The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, APD says, adding that he remains hospitalized in critical condition with broken ribs and a fractured spine, among other injuries. When APD was able to get a statement from him, he said the Mercedes abruptly changed lanes and struck him from behind. After hitting the Mercedes’ windshield, he said he remembered being thrown to the road and sliding on his head, charging documents say.

Two suspects have been arrested and charged in the robbery of the Smoke King shop, located in Mountain View.

An armed robbery was reported to the Anchorage Police Department just after 7 p.m. Saturday. The caller said that “a male armed with a gun demanded money from an employee at the Smoke King and then fled in a vehicle,” according to a release from APD.

The suspect — identified as 21-year-old Siaosi Sila — “left the store with approximately $3,000 in cash,” according to court documents.

Police were given a suspect vehicle description by witnesses, who were also able to give them license plate information. APD located the vehicle near automotive garages on the 340 block of Concrete Street.

Charging documents say Sila was the passenger in a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Solomon Tavita, who did not pull over when police activated their lights. Sila then ran into an auto shop, but APD was able to obtain a warrant and located the gun and the suspected amount of cash, charging documents say.

Sila was charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree weapons misconduct, two counts of third-degree assault and violating conditions of his release from jail.

Tavita was charged with failure to stop at direction of an officer. As of Sunday afternoon’s arraignment, Tavita was no longer charged with first-degree robbery, pending further investigation and review of additional police reports.

The man suspected of robbing a bank in Juneau was arrested as he tried to fly out of the city, police say.

On Friday at about 11:15 a.m., the Juneau Police Department received reports from the Northrim Bank, located in the 8700 block of Glacier Highway, that a robbery had just taken place.

Investigation revealed that a male, who claimed to have an explosive device on him, entered the bank and left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a release from JPD.

Fourteen JPD officers and two FBI agents responded to the incident. The suspect’s image was captured on security cameras. Police say no one was hurt during the robbery.

Police put out an information release, along with photos of the man, asking for the public’s help in finding him.

On Saturday, at about 12:14 p.m., JPD was notified of a “suspicious male was attempting to fly out of Juneau.” The man has been identified as 52-year-old Larry Randolph Powell, of Bay Minette, Alabama. Police say Powell matched the description of the person who robbed Northrim Bank. He also had an undisclosed amount of cash on him.

After further investigation, police arrested Powell for first-degree robbery, second-degree theft and terroristic threats.

2 arrested in connection with at least 6 Mat-Su residential burglaries/thefts

Troopers have arrested two people who they say are responsible for at least six residential burglaries/thefts in the Mat-Su Valley area.

In March, the Alaska State Troopers’ Criminal Suppression Unit executed a search warrant at a residence and a storage unit in Wasilla. During the investigation, several hundred stolen items were recovered, according to an online AST dispatch posted Sunday. Troopers say these stolen items included rare paintings, 35 firearms, sporting equipment, tools, family heirlooms and personal documents, including passports, photo IDs, IRS information and other items.

The six unsolved burglaries/thefts were linked with the stolen items AST recovered. Further investigation linked Timothy Taylor and Linda Friend, both from Wasilla, to the crimes.

“Further investigation determined the parties had been stealing U.S. Mail from mailboxes,” AST says, adding that once the U.S. Postal Service was notified, authorities identified “several hundred individual and business victims of mail theft.”

CSU also determined Taylor had stolen, forged and cashed several checks from one of the burglary victims — with the estimated value taken totaling about $20,000.

“However, many of the stolen items were family heirlooms and keepsakes and had more sentimental value than dollar value,” AST says.

Troopers say at least one victim in the string of burglaries has been identified as a previous customer of a meat delivery service company called Harding Ranch Meats — one that Taylor previously worked for.

Taylor and Friend have both been arrested. Arrest warrants have also been requested for two other adults who are suspected to be involved in the string of burglaries and thefts, troopers say.

Those affected by the mail theft have been notified by U.S. Postal Inspectors.

Double stabbing suspect’s arraignment marked with profane outbursts

The man charged in connection with the Friday morning stabbing of his mother and father appeared in court today for his arraignment.

“The thing of it is, you’re gonna let me f*cking go home today” — those were some of the first words out of 40-year-old Martin Victor IV’s mouth to the judge — followed by, ”Jesus came back. I’m king.”

Victor is charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree attempted murder. On Friday, at around 9:15 a.m., Victor’s mother called the Anchorage Police Department to report that her son had stabbed her and her husband.

When officers arrived to the Fairview residence, they found Victor’s mother and father suffering from life-threatening wounds, according to court documents. Victor was not at the scene when officers arrived. He was later located with “blood on his clothing and fresh wounds to his hands,” the documents say.

From what police were able to gather, Victor was out on bail and had a hearing scheduled for Friday but didn’t want to go. When Victor’s father encouraged him to go to the hearing, Victor “got a knife and began stabbing his father,” court documents say.

“He then attacked his mother in an attempt to keep her from calling the police,” the documents state.

When APD came into contact with Victor and tried to interview him about the incident, he began to show signs of “obvious mental issues,” according to the officer’s affidavit.

“He became angry when I asked if I could read him his rights,” the documents say. “He said something like ‘a mortal can not give him rights.’”

In Sunday’s court appearance, Victor repeatedly interrupted the judge throughout the arraignment, stating that he was “above the law.” He also had to be physically escorted by an officer.

“F*cking drop the charges,” Victor said as the charges against him were presented. “Just drop the charges.”

Victor’s prior convictions include shoplifting and driving under the influence. Victor’s mother and father also previously petitioned for a domestic violence order against Victor, court documents say.

The Anchorage Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a man suspecting of sexually assaulting a woman near the University of Alaska Anchorage campus.

The victim, who assisted police in creating the sketch, reported the attack to UAA campus police just after 11 p.m. April 8. According to her, her assailant offered to let her spend the night at his house, as she did not live in Anchorage. While walking through the woods near Mosquito Lake, she says he “pushed her to the ground” and began assaulting her.

The suspect fled and, despite a K9 unit being deployed to the area, has not been found.

The victim described the suspect as a “stocky” male in his 20s, between 5-feet-5-inches and 5-feet-8-inches tall, with dark hair and freckles.

Police are asking anyone with information to call APD’s Special Victim’s Unit at 786-2431, or Crimestoppers to submit an anonymous tip by calling 561-STOP.

Investigators: suspect tampered with slain troopers’ guns

Alaska State Trooper investigators say the father of the man suspected of shooting two officers removed the slain officers’ handguns from their holsters and cocked them to make it appear as if his son had acted to save his life.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports investigators testified Monday in the Nenana trial of Arvin Kangas, who is charged with evidence tampering.

His son, Nathanial Kangas, faces murder charges in the deaths of Sgt. Scott Johnson and Trooper Gabe Rich.

They were shot May 1 in Tanana as they attempted to arrest Arvin Kangas.

Trooper Ramin Dunford testified that audio recorders worn by the fallen troopers picked up sound of Johnson’s handgun being cocked. He says he also heard what sounded like the pistol being placed under Johnson’s body.

A human skull was among items stolen from a home in Palmer back in March, according to court documents.

Timothy Taylor, 35, has been charged in connection with the theft of items from six homes in the Mat-Su Valley, along with 31-year-old Linda Friend. An investigation by Alaska State Troopers in March led to the recovery of hundreds of stolen items. One of these was a human skull that Friend had taken cellphone photos of, according to charging documents.

Following an anonymous tip, an AST investigation led to Taylor’s home, where troopers discovered numerous items linked to a reported theft on N. Branding Iron Lane. When troopers questioned Friend and Taylor, they admitted to stealing the human skull from the home, court documents say. Friend gave the trooper consent to search her phone, where he saw multiple photos of the skull, some of which included Taylor.

Other stolen items found in the home included animal skulls and bones, antlers, a scope, knives and personal items like a social security card and birth certificate, totaling to more than $2,000 in value, according to court documents.

Darren Rathbun, whose brother’s home is one suspected to have been hit by Friend and Taylor, initially used the internet to post a reward for any information that would help find the suspects. The Rathbuns were able to locate some of the items stolen at a local pawn shop.

Now that the suspects have been nabbed, Rathbun says he doesn’t look at himself as a hero.

“I stumbled on some information but really it was people coming forward to help us out along the way,” he said. “And we immediately handed it off to troopers. I could have went in like, this is the Wild, Wild West, I’m gonna handle things on my own, of course everybody is tempted to in these times. But, no, the troopers had their job to do.”

The investigation into the thefts is ongoing, and troopers say two more suspects may be involved. Friend and Taylor were taken to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility following their arrest.

A jury has convicted a 59-year-old Tanana man on evidence tampering charges after two Alaska State Troopers were shot to death.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (http://is.gd/VEIz2D) Arvin Kangas began to cry after the verdict was read Thursday. The jury was to resume deliberations whether aggravating circumstances could increase the sentence.

Prosecutors claimed Kangas moved handguns belonging to the two troopers after his son allegedly shot and killed them last year.

The jury heard about one hour of combined audio and video footage taken before, during and after the shooting.

The footage comes from audio recorders worn by the officers and nearly 30 minutes of video taken by a neighbor.

Arvin Kangas’ son, Nathanial Kangas, faces trial in November for the deaths of Sgt. Scott Johnson and trooper Gabe Rich.

Jerry Active was found guilty on 12 counts Friday for killing two grandparents and then assaulting three generations of the same family at an Anchorage home in 2013.

The jury found Active guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two count of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree sexual assault, one count of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor, two counts of second-degree sexual assault, one count of first-degree burglary and two counts of fourth-degree assault.

Active was arrested and charged with killing Touch Chea and Sorn Sreap in their home and then sexually assaulting Sreap, a toddler and a great-grandmother.

In closing arguments Thursday, prosecutors said neighbor testimony proved Active broke into the Mountain View apartment and terrorized the family. The defense argued police failed to test key pieces of evidence for DNA.

Active had been released from jail about 12 hours before the crime spree.

He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 21.

This story will be updated with sentencing information when it becomes available. Please check back.

ANCHORAGE — The Anchorage Police Department says there may be more victims of a man accused of inappropriately touching children at the Anchor Lutheran School.

Adam Wilkinson, 32, worked for the school as a Child Watch employee between 1999 and 2014, and recently entered a guilty plea on a single count of first-degree harassment, police said in a statement.

At least one individual came forward about their interaction with Wilkinson, leading to a formal investigation by police that revealed at least four victims, according to APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad. Wilkinson admitted to “having inappropriate contact with multiple female juveniles who were attending the Child Watch program,” the statement said.

Wilkinson was first charged with four counts of first-degree harassment in October 2014, later reduced to one as part of a plea agreement Monday.

Oistad says while the case is closed, prosecutors believe there may be more victims, spanning his 15 years with the school.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding those encounters, particularly if they are themselves victims, to contact Det. Chris Thomas with APD’s Special Victim’s Unit by calling 907-786-2628.

Editor’s Note: An original release from Anchorage police named Wilkinson’s place of employment as Anchorage Lutheran School, rather than Anchor Lutheran School. This was corrected in a later release, and reflected here.

Two men have been arrested after stealing several dozen pizzas and trying to resell them to police, authorities say.

At 10 a.m. Sunday, Nome troopers were notified of the theft of 80 frozen pizzas from the Gambell Native Store warehouse during a burglary sometime earlier that morning, according to an online dispatch from Alaska State Troopers. The pizzas were valued at $1,100 total.

Village police officers investigated the burglary and theft, troopers wrote. Officers were able to identify two suspects – 29-year-old John Koozaata and 21-year-old Lewis Oozeva — after the men attempted to sell the stolen pizzas over the phone to on-duty personnel.

The two admitted to eating five of the pizzas. The other 75 pizzas were recovered, according to troopers.

Both men were arrested and taken to Nome to await formal charges of second-degree burglary and second-degree theft.

Dustin Badillo indicted for recent kidnapping, sexual assault

The man accused of sexually assaulting a woman and kidnapping her and her two children was indicted Wednesday on 18 charges.

Badillo was indicted on nine counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of kidnapping, one count of first-degree vehicle theft, one count of third-degree misconduct involving a weapon and one count each of first and second-degree sexual assault.

The charges stem from a crime spree that began around 8 a.m. April 22, when a man armed with a gun — later identified as 20-year-old Badillo — approached a woman and her two children in their garage as they were leaving. After sexually assaulting the woman, Badillo forced all three victims into their vehicle and went to multiple retail stores and an ATM to withdraw money from the woman’s bank account.

He left the family near the 300 block of Boniface Parkway around 11 a.m., driving away in their Kia Sedona. The Anchorage Police Department took the family into protective custody after the woman dialed 911 to report the incident, according to APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

APD located the family’s vehicle later that day at an unspecified location.

Police arrested Badillo the next day at 4:37 p.m. after a short foot chase near North Star Elementary School. Police were able to locate him after receiving a report of a suspicious man behind the school.

Another call to police earlier that day placed Badillo at a home near the intersection of 15th Avenue and F Street, where the residences claimed they came home to find him inside and armed.

If convicted, Badillo faces up to 99 years in prison for the kidnapping and sexual assault charges, a release from the Attorney General’s office states. The severity of the sentence will depend on the judge’s view on the seriousness of the crimes, and Badillo’s criminal history. Badillo has prior convictions for second-degree escape and first-degree burglary.
