With car thefts up, Airport Heights launches volunteer community patrol program

More than 500 vehicles have been stolen in Anchorage since November, according to data from the Anchorage Police Department.

No neighborhood is immune from the increase in theft, including areas where, before last fall, it wasn’t a significant problem.

“Every week, we’re hearing about another one,” said Airport Heights resident Kalen Saxton.

She said during the past few months, thieves in the neighborhood have gotten bold. Cars have been stolen from driveways while families were eating breakfast inside. Saxton said the spike in stolen cars, alongside an increase in home break-ins, has put the community on edge.

“It just amped up, so we amped up,” she said.

The Airport Heights Community Council is in the first stages of getting its community patrol program off the ground. It’s different from a neighborhood watch program, in which people look out for neighbors by keeping an eye on their property, like taking in newspapers when a family is on vacation. Instead, a group of six people patrol the streets at night. They look out for suspicious activity, and if they see something, they alert APD.

Saxton says while the patrollers cannot intervene, they draw attention to what’s going on “by shining a flashlight or honking horns or doing something to say, ‘hey, people are watching you.’”

As of now, none of the volunteers are paid for their time or gas, but funding could come soon. Even so, Saxton says many people would continue to do it for free.

“I had one dad tell me, ‘You know, it’s worth losing a few hours of sleep in the night if I’ll feel that my wife and children are safe,’” said Saxton.

She said the ideal solution is having more APD officers on the streets. But until that happens, the community will have to step up to keep out crime.

A drive to Soldotna Monday morning for one man was a close call with death, according to Alaska State Troopers.

While driving on the Seward Highway around 6:30 a.m., 39-year-old Nathan Shearer was shot at from another vehicle. While passing a vehicle near Mile 56, Shearer told troopers he “saw a flash, accompanied by a loud bang,” followed by his front passenger window breaking.

Shearer called 911 multiple times and stayed on the phone with dispatchers while continuing to head to Soldotna, troopers said in an online dispatch. When troopers investigated his vehicle, they found a bullet has “struck the front right passenger window, went through the compartment, in front of Shearer, barely missing him and exited the driver side window.”

Troopers were able to identify and find the driver of the vehicle from where the shot was fired. Troopers said the suspect, 22-year-old Doug Pardue of Kasilof, was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

He admitted to troopers that he had shot his gun out the window as Shearers passed him on the highway.

Troopers seized Pardue’s weapon and charged him with first-degree attempted murder, first- and fourth-degree misconduct involving a weapon, third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. He is being held without bail, according to troopers.

A 45-year-old Anchorage man has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for attempted sexual exploitation of children and attempted foreign travel for illicit sexual conduct.

Federal prosecutors in an announcement say Jason Jayavarman attempted to arrange a child sex tourism trip for himself and others to Cambodia.

He was convicted in March 2015.

Prosecutors at Javerman’s trial presented evidence that he made 12 trips to Cambodia before his arrest in 2013 and made videos of himself engaging in sexual acts with a person he believed was a child.

An undercover FBI agent collected evidence indicating Jayavarman planned another trip for himself and others and explained to a potential traveler how to groom a child for sex and avoid arrest.

When Anchorage Police Department officers arrived, they arrested 26-year-old Faamolemole Uiese. Police say he was arrested after jumping a fence and falling to the ground.

Police stated Uiese was bleeding from his leg when he was arrested and the source of the blood was a self-inflicted gunshot wound from weeks before. Uiese was charged with criminal trespassing.

The Anchorage Police Department says they are looking for the driver of a red truck that allegedly struck five parked vehicles before taking off from an apartment complex.

Police were called to the Alpine Apartments on Mockingbird Drive at 3:01 a.m. Sunday after an apparent hit and run occurred.

“According to several witnesses, a silver car and a red truck were leaving the parking lot, at a high rate of speed, at the same time,” APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad said in a statement. “Some witnesses thought the two vehicles may be chasing one another.”

Oistad said the red truck then struck five parked vehicles and fled the parking lot.

The driver of the silver car, 20-year-old Joseph Medina, was found at the apartments, and was arrested for an outstanding warrant. Oistad said he was also charged for driving without a license and misconduct involving a controlled substance. She said he was uncooperative with police and would not explain the incident involving the red truck.

“We do not have a license plate or identity of the driver of the red truck at this time,” Oistad wrote, noting that no cameras were able to capture the vehicle. “That truck left the scene before police arrived and has yet to be located.”

Oistad said only the red truck damaged vehicles. Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of the red truck’s driver is asked to call APD at 786-8900.

Updated at 9:58 a.m. on Monday, March 28

ANCHORAGE — An attempted break in at a Midtown diner led to a vehicle chase and a search that closed down multiple streets Monday morning, after the suspects rammed a police vehicle.

The Anchorage Police Department has released details of the incident that led to road closures Monday as they searched for suspects in the area between A Street and C Street.

Around 12:30 a.m. Monday APD received a report of multiple people breaking into Kriner’s Diner at 2409 C St., according to a release from police. When officers arrived, a white SUV rammed a patrol vehicle and fled the area and two men ran from behind the building. Police said it doesn’t appear the suspects entered the diner before APD arrived.

Some officers chased the SUV when the driver fled, headed the wrong way down C Street, but due to danger to officers and other motorists the chase was called off. Not long after, the SUV stopped on A Street near Fireweed Lane. Two women who were inside of the SUV were arrested and taken or further questioning.

The vehicle had been stolen and seized by police.

Meanwhile, other officers initiated a search for the two men that fled on foot. During the search, two officers were walking up an embankment near West 22nd Avenue and C Street when multiple shots were fired at them. The officers were able to take cover and avoid getting hit by the bullets.

APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said in an email Monday that police have not been able to determine where the shots came from and who fired them.

APD’s SWAT Team was called out after 4:30 a.m. to help in the search for the two suspects and investigate the shooting. Streets were closed as officers searched the area.

The search was called off just before 7:30 a.m. and all streets have been reopened. The suspects were not located.

No officers were injured in the incident.

A release from APD later Monday morning described the men – one is possibly bald, the other had dark hair. One man was wearing a gray jacket and the other wore a blue sweatshirt.

Anyone with information on the suspects involved or their possible whereabouts, is asked to contact APD at 786-8900 and press zero to speak with a dispatcher. To provide an anonymous crime tip, contact Anchorage Crime Stoppers online at www.anchoragecrimestoppers.com or call 561-STOP.

Alaska State Troopers are looking for a pickup loaned to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Troopers say the truck was reported stolen Monday but has been missing for more than three weeks.

The black Dodge pickup, with Alaska license plate GRJ861, was loaned to the race by an Anchorage dealership, Anchorage Chrysler Dodge, for race volunteers.

The ceremonial start of the race was March 5. Racing began a day later in Willow.

Troopers say the pickup was apparently stolen March 6 in the Willow area but the theft was not discovered because of a miscommunication between race volunteers.

The truck may be in Anchorage.

Anchorage police were involved in a short pursuit of the truck Sunday before it was reported stolen. The truck was last seen on Sixth Avenue.

Last updated at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 30

A man and a dog were shot in a robbery at a residence in South Anchorage Wednesday afternoon, police say.

Police were dispatched to a home on the 8700 block of Sultana Drive shortly after 3:30 p.m. following a report of a gunshot wound, according to police spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

Oistaid said in an email the man was inside his home when he heard his doorbell ring twice.

“Once the man opened his front door, he saw the male suspect walking away,” Oistad wrote. “Upon hearing the door open, the suspect turned back around with a package in one hand.  The suspect stated, ‘I have a package for you,’ and then pulled out a gun with his other hand and shot the victim. The victim initially fell to the ground, but quickly got up and ran downstairs inside the home.”

Oistad said the suspect followed the victim into the home and then fatally shot a German Shepherd inside.

“By the time the homeowner retrieved his own weapon and got back to the front door, the suspect had already exited the house and was entering his own vehicle to drive away,” Oistad added, noting it doesn’t appear he took any items from the home.

Police said the man was transported to a local hospital with a single gunshot wound to his upper body, which police spokeswoman Renee Oistad described as non-life threatening.  The victim’s mother was sleeping in the home at the time of the shooting, but was not hurt. A neighbor told KTVA a woman and her stepson lived in the home with their two dogs.

The suspect is still at large, according to police. He is described as “a white or mixed Hispanic/white male,” according to police, and is approximately six feet tall with a medium build, short dark hair. He is believed to be in his late 20s to early 30s and was wearing baggy clothes.

“The description of the suspect’s vehicle is not being released at this time,” Oistad noted.

Oistad said police are asking anyone with security cameras in the area of the shooting — particularly those along Sultana Drive, Hillside Drive, or Upper Huffman Road – to call APD Det. Anderson at 786-2401 or by emailing janderson@muni.org.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested after it was found he was in possession of child pornography, according to an online Alaska State Trooper dispatch.

On March 22, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted the Alaska Bureau of Investigation to possible distribution of “an image depicting child sexual exploitation” by a suspect in the Wasilla area, troopers said.

Following a brief investigation, ABI’s Technical/Financial Crimes Unit arrested Thomas Jacobs at his home near Wasilla.

“Additional evidence was seized, corroborating the initial report,” troopers said.

Jacobs currently faces a single count of possession of child pornography and is being held under a $5,000 bail with a third-party custodian requirement.

Jacobs has a previous conviction of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, stemming from a 1994 case out of Palmer. Part of his sentencing requirements in that case mandated he register as a sex offender.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – A former operating officer of a western Alaska mine has been sentenced to a year in prison for violating the federal Clean Water Act.

Federal prosecutors said Friday that James Slade of Calgary, Canada, is the third senior executive of the Platinum Creek Mine to be convicted in the case. Prosecutors say all three had worked for the now-defunct XS Platinum, which had owned the mining claims.

According to prosecutors, Slade was convicted for discharging polluted wastewater into the Salmon River during the 2010 and 2011 mining seasons. Prosecutors say samples of the wastewater showed toxic levels of metals.

Prosecutors say to other XS Platinum officials who live in Australia also were indicted, but have refused to return for trial in the U.S.

Last updated at 2:23 p.m. Sat. April 2

A 36-year-old man was charged Friday in connection with a South Anchorage home invasion earlier this week.

Police said Joseph Edmund Spindle has been charged with first-degree assault and robbery, as well as cruelty to animals and third-degree weapons misconduct.

Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to the 8700 block of Sultana Drive. Dean Jones, the homeowner, had been shot and his dog was killed.

Police said Spindle carried a box as rang the doorbell of the Hillside home. He told Jones he had a package to deliver. When Jones opened the door, he pulled a gun on him, police said.

“Jones attempted to push [Spindle] over the railing, but was unsuccessful and the man shot him,” police said in court documents.

Spindle then shot Jones’ German shepherd inside and fled.

Jones was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his wound.

Police were also called to a burglary at a home on the 5300 block of Riverton Avenue. Among the items reported missing was a black Nissan sports car, which police said matched the vehicle Spindle used to flee the shooting. Police stated the victims of the burglary and car theft called Spindle their son.

Spindle was arrested Friday morning at a residence on the 4600 block of Spenard for violating his probation. Police searched his room and found a gun with ammunition matching that used in the shooting. He was taken to the Anchorage Correctional Complex and his initial bail was set at $20,000, plus a third-party custodian. Spindle has a history of criminal violence, with at least two assault convictions and another related to family violence, court records show.

Police have located the vehicle involved in an early morning hit and run. The driver hit a man and left him lying in the road with severe injuries, according to police.

The man was first spotted lying in the road on Boniface Parkway, near Perry Drive, around 5 a.m. Emergency personnel and police responded to the scene and found the man — identified only as a 24-year-old male active-duty service member — had multiple severe injuries, including one to his head.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.

Due to his ongoing medical treatment, police said they were unable to speak with him about the collision. However, through their own investigation of the scene — which they said had pieces of vehicle debris and tire markings — they found the vehicle that struck the man was likely missing its driver-side mirror. They believe the vehicle was traveling southbound on Boniface at the time of the crash.

Later Saturday evening, police found the vehicle they claim was involved. Police have so far not made any arrests as they continue their investigations into the circumstances leading up to the crash.
