ANCHORAGE – An elderly woman in the Fairbanks area avoided being scammed by an offer “too good to be true,” according to troopers.
Two men contacted the woman about Las Vegas-based “American Awards” and told her she’d won $5,000, according to a report from Alaska State Troopers.
The money would be credited to her credit card, they said, but they needed her to give them “a $250 money pack from Wal-Mart to complete the transaction,” the report said. They told her she needed to show up alone somewhere for a handoff.
A credit card company, however, revealed the credits to cards didn’t happen. The woman contacted troopers about the incident.
“She was smart enough to see through it,” said Megan Peters, troopers spokeswoman.
Even though the attempted scam happened in Fairbanks, all Alaskans should be aware of these types of tricks, Peters said.
