A man and a dog were shot in a robbery at a residence in South Anchorage Wednesday afternoon, police say.
Police were dispatched to a home on the 8700 block of Sultana Drive shortly after 3:30 p.m. following a report of a gunshot wound, according to police spokeswoman Renee Oistad.
Oistaid said in an email the man was inside his home when he heard his doorbell ring twice.
“Once the man opened his front door, he saw the male suspect walking away,” Oistad wrote. “Upon hearing the door open, the suspect turned back around with a package in one hand. The suspect stated, ‘I have a package for you,’ and then pulled out a gun with his other hand and shot the victim. The victim initially fell to the ground, but quickly got up and ran downstairs inside the home.”
Oistad said the suspect followed the victim into the home and then fatally shot a German Shepherd inside.
“By the time the homeowner retrieved his own weapon and got back to the front door, the suspect had already exited the house and was entering his own vehicle to drive away,” Oistad added, noting it doesn’t appear he took any items from the home.
Police said the man was transported to a local hospital with a single gunshot wound to his upper body, which police spokeswoman Renee Oistad described as non-life threatening. The victim’s mother was sleeping in the home at the time of the shooting, but was not hurt. A neighbor told KTVA a woman and her stepson lived in the home with their two dogs.
The suspect is still at large, according to police. He is described as “a white or mixed Hispanic/white male,” according to police, and is approximately six feet tall with a medium build, short dark hair. He is believed to be in his late 20s to early 30s and was wearing baggy clothes.
“The description of the suspect’s vehicle is not being released at this time,” Oistad noted.
Oistad said police are asking anyone with security cameras in the area of the shooting — particularly those along Sultana Drive, Hillside Drive, or Upper Huffman Road – to call APD Det. Anderson at 786-2401 or by emailing janderson@muni.org.
