A man was taken to an Anchorage hospital after a shooting at Arctic/Benson Park Sunday afternoon, police said.
In an email to KTVA, police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said the shooting was reported at 2:27 p.m. When police arrived at the park, located at 750 W. 31st Ave., they found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his back.
“The 39-year-old adult male victim was sitting on a bench at the park with a female acquaintance,” Oistad said in a statement. “A suspect adult male walked up to the couple on the bench, the men exchanged words, and the suspect fired two shots before fleeing the area on foot.”
The victim was transported for treatment of his injury at a nearby hospital. Oistad said his wound was considered serious.
“The suspect was described as a thin white male who was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black pants,” Oistad said, adding it was not immediately clear what the suspect’s motive was for shooting the victim. “This incident is believed to be targeted and not random.”
