The Anchorage Police Department said one man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a five hour-long standoff in an East Anchorage apartment complex Monday. The man’s name is being withheld, police said.
According to APD, the incident began to unravel shortly before 11 a.m. when officers attempted to stop a Volkswagen sedan in the Debarr Road and Pine Street area. The driver had a felony warrant for a probation violation and sped away from the officers.
At a 42-unit apartment complex, on the 4600 block of Reka Drive, the driver abandoned the vehicle and barricaded himself inside of one of the apartments.
Shortly after, officers closed Reka and Pine and began searching the complex. During the search the driver fired “several shots” and damaged the building.
The standoff came to an end around 4 p.m. when the man stepped onto the balcony and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
