A man arrested by police for theft has been indicted with the murder of Michael Mitchell, whose body was found Aug. 22 on Campbell Airstrip Road.

According to a Friday press release from the Department of Law, 18-year-old Kutay Bangout was indicted Thursday for 22-year-old Mitchell’s death.

The release states Bangout was recently charged and arrested for second-degree theft. The grand jury returned indictments on murder in the first and second degree against Bangout.

Around 8:30 am. on Aug. 22, the Anchorage Police Department (APD) received reports of a body on Campbell Airstrip Road. Officers responded and determined the body was Mitchell, who appeared to have been shot multiple times in the head and torso.

APD’s investigation pointed toward Bangout as a suspect. According to the emailed release, several Anchorage citizens, businesses and support from the Alaska State Troopers helped the investigation.

The department stated Bangout has been in police custody since last week. An arraignment for Bangout is expected in Anchorage Superior Court on Monday, Sept. 12.

If convicted, Bangout faces a sentence of up to 99 years in prison.
