The Anchorage Police Department (APD) has evacuated schools, as they search for an armed suspect believed to be connected to an early morning shooting that left one person dead.
In an updated release from police, they wrote that a shooting near the intersection of 15th Avenue and E Street was reported to the department at 6:16 a.m. When emergency responders arrived, they found a male dead at the scene.
They’ve been searching for a suspect ever since.
Two nearby schools — Chugach Option Elementary and Central Middle School — are closed, according to Heidi Embley with the Anchorage School District. In a separate release issued around 7:30 a.m., APD said that children from both schools would be bussed to West High School for parent pick-up.

According to APD, the suspect involved in the shooting is a black man, 6 feet and 2 inches tall, with black hair and black eyes. Police said he could go by the name Tommy Rumph. APD also said that he was last seen wearing a long sleeve dark shirt, with white stripes along the collar bone.
