A man was stabbed multiple times Tuesday after asking someone to stop harassing women near the Brother Francis Shelter in Anchorage, police said.

Officers responded to reports of the stabbing just after 3 a.m. Tuesday and found the victim had been stabbed “in several areas of his body,” police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said in a statement. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which Oistad said were not life-threatening.

According to Oistad, the victim told police he was standing in the courtyard at the shelter when he saw someone cussing and insulting women.

“The victim told the suspect to stop,” Oistad wrote. “The suspect replied, ‘Come over and make me.’”

When the victim approached him, the suspect pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed him, she said. The suspect then left the area on foot; Oistad said police were not able to find him.

“The suspect is described as a black male, about 6 feet tall, who was wearing a gray sweater and was carrying a gray and brown backpack,” she wrote.

In an email to KTVA, Oistad said it was not clear if the suspect was someone who uses services provided at the shelter or why he was there.

Oistad said anyone with information about the stabbing or the suspect is asked to call police at 907-786-8900, or Crime Stoppers at 907-561-7867 to do so anonymously.
