The Anchorage Police Department says it is investigating an early Saturday morning mugging and a nearby shooting that occurred moments later.
Police first responded to the area of Fourth Avenue and D Street just after 2:50 a.m. A male victim told them he was robbed of his jewelry by multiple Samoan males, police said in a statement.
“It was reported to police that some of the suspects had gone down the stairs of the Sunshine Mall Plaza,” the statement elaborated. “When officers started heading down the stairway they heard multiple shots fired in the parking lot.”
Some of the shots allegedly came from a silver Escalade attempting to leave the parking lot, according to police, who stopped the vehicle. Two males inside were detained by police for questioning and the vehicle was impounded after a warrant was obtained.
“Officers located a gun inside of the vehicle and it was seized as evidence,” police stated. “Several shell casings were also located in the parking lot. Additional shell casings were also found along Fourth Avenue near D Street.”
Police said no charges have been filed in either case and their investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call Anchorage police at 907-786-8900.
