An Anchorage man was indicted this week for allegedly shooting a Palmer homeowner during a July burglary.

The burglary was reported in the early morning hours of July 21, according to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch. Two individuals entered a home on Plumley Road through a window, according to troopers.

“When the homeowner confronted the assailant with a firearm, an assailant shot the homeowner in the arm,” troopers wrote.

Both suspects fled on foot. Troopers said a search utilizing a Wasilla Police Department K-9 unit was unsuccessful.

Medical personnel treated the homeowner at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, according to troopers, who said another person in the home at the time of the burglary was uninjured.

The investigation, led by the Criminal Suppression Unit, helped authorities identify 22-year-old Shyheim Chavis as one of the suspects, according to troopers. Further, he was determined to be the suspect who shot the homeowner.

On Wednesday, a Palmer grand jury indicted Chavis on multiple counts related to the burglary, including first-degree attempted murder, third-degree assault, first-degree burglary, and two counts each of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery, according to online court records.

Officials booked Chavis at the Anchorage Correctional Complex under a $500,000 bail, according to troopers.

The investigation and the search for the second suspect are ongoing, troopers said.
