Riek Gat made his first appearance in Alaska court on Tuesday for his alleged role in an August murder. Gat was extradited from West Virginia, where he fled soon after 22-year-old Michael Mitchell’s murder.
Mitchell was shot multiple times in the head and chest and left to die on Campbell Airstrip Road. He was found the morning of Aug. 22 by neighbors heading to work.
Police arrested 18-year-old Kutay Bangout and named him the primary suspect in the case. He pleaded not guilty to first- and second-degree murder charges in September.
Gat is accused of helping Bangout, and was arraigned Tuesday on charges of first- and second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty to both charges in Anchorage Superior Court, according to Anchorage District Attorney Clint Campion.
Judge Michael Corey denied Gat bail, Campion stated. Campion said Gat was likely being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex.
Gat’s arrival in Anchorage was the result of a multi-agency effort to locate him. Officers from the Morgantown Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, with information from Alaska law enforcement, arrested Gat in Morgantown, West Virginia in mid-September.
