On the same day Sgt. Allen Brandt’s body was sent home to Fairbanks, a grand jury indicted his alleged killer on additional charges of murder in connection with Brandt’s death.

Anthony Jenkins-Alexie, 29, is accused of shooting Brandt six times on the night of Oct. 16. Brandt initally survived his injuries and was on the road to recovery when he unexpectedly died due to complications during an eye surgery in Anchorage on Friday.

Jenkins-Alexie was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree vehicle theft, second-degree theft of a firearm and tampering with physical evidence. He nows faces two additional counts of second-degree murder and a single count of first-degree murder, according to Fairbanks District Attorney Gregg Olson.

“The grand jury also returned a special verdict finding that Sgt. Allan Brandt was a ‘uniformed or otherwise clearly identifiable peace officer who was engaged in the performance of official duties at the time he was shot,'” Olson said in a statement. He explained that if Jenkins-Alexie is convicted, the special verdict will mean a mandatory sentence of 99 years in prison on the first-degree murder charge.

Jenkins-Alexie is being held without bail while he awaits trials. His next scheduled court appearance is Nov. 3 at 3 p.m.
