A Mountain View man is being held on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, assault and vehicle theft, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Matthew Scharber’s two alleged victims were left injured on the Palmer side of Hatcher Pass on Thursday, according to an online dispatch. The men were transported to Valley hospitals for treatment of their injuries, which AST spokeswoman Megan Peters described in the dispatch as not life-threatening.
Both men, in their 20s, told troopers their Subaru Legacy was stolen. Peters said after an alert was sent out about the vehicle, Anchorage police found it in a Tikahtnu Commons parking lot and impounded it for the investigation. She said as a result of that investigation, AST’s Special Crimes Investigation Unit (SCIU) “developed” 34-year-old Scharber as the suspect in the case.
After obtaining an arrest warrant and a search warrant for his Mountain View home, Anchorage SWAT and AST personnel took Scharber into custody on Nov. 1 around 5:45 p.m., Peters wrote. At his home, they found “evidence relating to the multiple crimes for which Scharber was arrested,” according to Peters, and a “large amount” of methamphetamine, a scale and drug packaging materials. Investigators were not immediately available to elaborate on what was found at Scharber’s home.
Scharber is awaiting his arraignment at the Anchorage Correctional Complex without bail. Investigators charged him with two counts each of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and kidnapping, and a single count of first-degree vehicle theft.
“SCIU is working with the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office,” Peters added.
The investigation is ongoing, according to Peters, who said additional information about the case would be released at a later time.
This is a developing story, please check back for updates as they become available.
