The Anchorage Police Department says new information shows a stabbing that was believed to have occurred at the Brother Francis Shelter early Saturday morning may have actually taken place in the area of Fifth Avenue and Gamble Street.
The stabbing was reported just before 1 a.m., according to a statement from police. When officers and medics arrived at the shelter, they found a man with a single stab wound to the back.
“The victim had shown up to Brother Francis to report that he had been stabbed,” APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro explained in an email. “Staff at BFS said that the victim frequently comes there.”
Castro said the wound “was very minor” and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.
“The victim did not have any suspect information to provide police with,” Castro wrote. “Police did not have any reports of any kind of disturbances or incidents happening in that area prior to the assault. The victim stated he had been in the area of 5th Ave and Gamble before going to Brother Francis.”
She said police have reviewed footage at the Brother Francis Shelter, but “did not see anything indicating an assault there as far as what their cameras show.”
