A 31-year-old Anchorage man who stabbed a security guard at the Midtown Fred Meyer was indicted by a grand jury on assault and robbery charges Thursday, according to a Friday release from the District Attorney’s Office.

The criminal complaint states Steven Treadway was approached by a Fred Meyer loss prevention officer on Nov. 20 because the officer had seen him steal food and take it to the bathroom the previous day.
As the officer escorted Treadway out of the store, the security alarm went off. According to the complaint, Treadway was told he could leave without issue if he returned any stolen merchandise in his backpack.
He began pulling stolen items from his bag, including a headlamp and a screwdriver set. Neither were responsible for setting off the security alarm, the officer states in the complaint.
As the officer questioned him, Treadway made a run for the door and began swinging a knife, stabbing the man in the neck.

He was wrestled to the ground and held by the officer and multiple bystanders until police arrived, the complaint reads.
Court records show Treadway has been charged with multiple counts of theft and assault dating back to 2004.
In the Friday release, District Attorney Clint Campion said Treadway faces first-degree robbery and second-degree assault charges for the Nov. 20 incident and is currently being held on $2,500 bail. If convicted, Treadway could see a sentence of up to 20 years in prison for the robbery and up to 10 years in prison for the assault.
