The Anchorage Police Department has identified the man who allegedly stole a vehicle with a toddler inside earlier this month as 37-year-old Bruce Allen King. Police are now asking for the public’s help in locating him.
King allegedly stole a running car from McCarrey Road on Jan. 1 while a child was still buckled in a car seat, according to a Nixle alert from police.
The vehicle was later found abandoned behind a Brown Jug liquor store on Bragaw Street. Police said the toddler was still inside, unharmed.
Police have charged King with first-degree vehicle theft, as well as reckless endangerment in the case, APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad confirmed.
Additionally, police say he was involved in two other vehicle theft cases, including one that occurred in front of patrol officers.
On Monday, King was spotted on the 1500 block of Hoyt Street in a Dodge Dakota that had been reported stolen from Boniface Boulevard the day before, according to a Nixle alert from Oistad. She noted that there were several firearms in the truck when it was stolen. A female passenger was also in the vehicle with King, and while she complied with officers’ orders to exit the vehicle, King attempted to drive off in the truck. It got stuck in the snow and he ran away, Oistad wrote.
During the search for King, a vehicle owner checking his mail saw an APD officer and approached them, leaving his vehicle running nearby, Oistad explained. While the driver was talking to APD, King allegedly jumped into the vehicle and began driving away.
“The citizen ran after his own vehicle, grabbed onto the open driver door and got into a verbal altercation with King,” Oistad wrote. “King hit the owner several times, and then accelerated once the driver let go.”
The driver had been dragged a short distance, but declined to be medically evaluated at the scene, she noted.
Oistad said police have obtained additional warrants against King for robbery, vehicle theft and two counts of third-degree assault.
King is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds, according to police. He has brown eyes and red hair. Ousted said he is believed to be armed.
Anyone with information on King’s whereabouts is asked to call APD at 907-786-8900. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can submit a tip via Crime Stoppers online or by calling 907-561-7867.
