Alaska State Troopers are investigating two fatal shootings of moose in Anchorage.
Wildlife troopers responded around 6 a.m. to Anchorage’s Mountain View neighborhood after the early Tuesday morning shooting of the female animal near Bragaw Street, according to an online dispatch. Troopers say the moose carcass was not salvaged by the shooter or shooters.
“Evidence was recovered from the scene and investigation is continuing,” troopers wrote.
A second moose was found dead near Valley of the Moon Park and also appeared to have been shot, a later dispatch stated.
Anchorage police reported that moose to troopers shortly before midnight on Tuesday, according to AST spokesman Tim DeSpain.
“It is unknown at this time if this moose poaching is connected to a cow moose that was shot during the early morning hours in Mountain View,” DeSpain wrote, adding in a phone interview that investigators had collected evidence from both scenes to compare.
DeSpain confirmed that a person who feels threatened by wildlife is allowed to defend themselves, but if an animal is killed, it must be reported, per state law.

Both carcasses were salvaged by local charities.
