A man accused of breaking into and stealing items from a midtown Anchorage tech store was arrested Monday evening, police say.
The case began Saturday when a male suspect backed a 2011 Volkswagen Golf into the front of Device Pitstop, located on West 36th Avenue. Footage from the store, shared in the above video, shows the suspect entering through a broken window and quickly gathering up a number of items before leaving. The store’s owner, Scott Stansbury, said the cost of damages and stolen items topped $20,000.
On Monday, an employee at High Frequency Wireless — a tech store on East 15th Avenue — call the Anchorage Police Department just before 4 p.m., saying a man was attempting to sell a phone reported stolen from Device Pitstop, according to a statement from APD. Officers arrived while the suspect, 45-year-old David Boyles, was still at the store.
“Boyles refused to comply with officer commands and began physically fighting all three officers,” APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad described the situation. “After a few minutes an officer gave a Taser warning. Boyles was tased after continuing to fight and refusing to obey officer instructions.”
Oistad said Boyles was then taken to a local hospital, where he was medically evaluated and cleared.
“Boyles exhibited signs of drug use to include extremely heightened physical strength,” she noted.
Officers charged Boyles with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. He was incarcerated on those charges, along with a felony probation violation warrant, Oistad said.
The Volkswagen Golf used in the burglary was found Monday evening on the 300 block of West 32nd Avenue, according to Oistad. She said the vehicle was originally stolen on Feb. 1, when it was left unattended and running.
