Alaska State Troopers say a man broke into a Wasilla home early Monday morning, and then fled, leading authorities on a high-speed chase.

The incident was first reported to troopers just before 2 a.m., according to an online dispatch. A 911 caller stated a man had broken into a home off of Scatters Way and was threatening the people inside with a gun. When troopers arrived, they saw the suspect leaving at a high rate of speed.

“A traffic stop was attempted at which point the vehicle failed to yield while reaching speeds of 104 mph,” troopers wrote.

Troopers chased the suspect another 25 miles until spike strips were able to stop the vehicle along the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, according to the dispatch. The driver was identified as 28-year-old Jacob Gearing, who troopers said was the same suspect from the home.

According to troopers, Gearing took the gun from the homeowner after breaking in, then pointed it at her and another person. Troopers said he then fled the home with the gun.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle Gearing had been driving was reported stolen out of Wasilla.

Troopers arrested Gearing and charged him with first-degree burglary, first-degree eluding, first-degree vehicle theft, reckless driving, violating a domestic violence protection order and two counts each of third-degree assault and second-degree theft. He is being held without bail at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility, according to troopers.
