Alaska State Troopers say they are looking for a Stebbins man accused of repeatedly hitting a dog with a hammer.
Troopers received a report of the alleged crime on March 19, according to an online dispatch. Troopers responded to Stebbins, located in the Norton Sound region in western Alaska, to investigate the report.
Their investigation revealed that 30-year-old Vincent Matthias had “injured a small dog by striking it multiple times with a hammer” the same morning they were notified, according to the dispatch.
Troopers wrote that alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.
Ten days later, a Nome grand jury indicted Matthias on a felony animal cruelty charge and troopers were granted a $10,000-bail warrant for his arrest.
According to online court records, Matthias has a previous history of assault and alcohol consumption.
Troopers stated they believe Matthias is in the Stebbins and St. Michael area, and have asked that anyone with information on his whereabouts to call them at 907-624-3073.
This is a developing story; please check back for updates.
