ANCHORAGE - A former Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson soldier has been accused of murdering two civilians during the Iraq War.
Military investigators say Sgt. Michael Barbera shot and killed two people in March 2007 while serving in Iraq and then lied to his superiors about what happened. The murders were pre-meditated, they say.
It wasn’t until this past November that the U.S. Army charged Barbera with murder.
In January, he was transferred to Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State for hearings to determine if he should be court-martialed.
Barbera was stationed at JBER from August 2011 to January 2014.
His trial is expected to take place in the coming months.
