At least six people are behind bars in Fairbanks after police say they robbed and beat up a man before ending up in a standoff with officers.

The incident began Sunday night when two people broke into a business. When confronted by the store owner, the suspects tied up the man and beat him up, according to Fairbanks Police. The man was held while the suspects burglarized several other buildings on the property belonging to the business.

Police say the suspects stole a car, guns and other property from the man.

Employees of the business arrived to find the burglarized buildings and called 911. Responding officers located the victim who was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital; his condition and identity are not known.

Monday, officers tracked the robberies to a home in downtown Fairbanks, when a standoff ensued. A heavy police presence was felt at the scene, as a couple of dozen officers from Fairbanks and North Pole Police Departments responded.

At one point, one armed suspect was visible on the roof, but officers were eventually able to get the man to surrender, along with every occupant of the house. In total, four people surrendered during the incident, according to Fairbanks Police.

“Of course, this had some significant urgency to it. It’s a very serious matter,” said Fairbank Police Chief Eric Jewkes. “You start tying people up, beating them, stealing their guns, and you know, it’s a serious public safety risk that we take seriously and we wanted it resolved as quickly as possible.”

Fairbanks Police say officers may have arrested as many as eight people. The identities of those involved have not yet been released; nor have their charges.
