A former Department of Corrections officer was sentenced to eight months in a federal prison on Tuesday after admitting he smuggled drugs into the Goose Creek Correctional Center.
Jason Spindler, 33, accepted a plea deal, agreeing to plead guilty to one count of drug conspiracy and one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Hattan, Spindler agreed to smuggle drugs into the Goose Creek facility on multiple occasions for several different inmates in March, April and May of last year.
A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office said Spindler admitted to being paid $1400 for his efforts. In each case, according to the news release, Spindler would meet with associates of inmates outside the prison, procure drugs from them and bring drugs back inside to distribute to the inmate who had commissioned his services.
Alaska Department of Corrections Commissioner Dean Williams said the Department took the breach very seriously and added he thought the sentence for a first-time felon like Spindler was fair.
“Because I think it sends the right message that all of us who work for the Department are serious about doing something about someone who would violate such public trust and traffic drugs– no matter who you are,” said Williams.
In addition to the eight-month sentence, Spindler is also required to forfeit his 2011 pickup truck, pay a $1400 fine and perform 120 hours of community service.
